About this listen

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Nicholas Sansbury Smith comes a brand-new novella set in the world of the Hell Divers series.

Before you knew him as the king or the Immortal, he was Commander Xavier “X” Rodriguez—with ninety-six dives under his belt, the most experienced Hell Diver on the airship known as the Hive. Time after time, he dived through the electrical storms, returning with parts to keep his home in the sky. Then, on a jump into Hades, the most hostile environment in North America, he sacrificed everything for mission and team. They returned to the airship with the fuel cells needed to keep the Hive running, but X was left behind.

This is the story of how he becomes the last man on Earth. His will drives him to keep fighting, to survive the monsters and the radiation in the wastes, to find a way back home. But as the days pass, he feels the things that make him human slipping away. He has become a waif, a phantom, with little to live for. Then he stumbles upon something that makes him feel again.

This is the chronicle of those lost years, told for the first time ever.

Great little novella giving us a beginning to X and Miles partnership. Voiced as always perfectly by R C Bray. Nicholas Sansbury Smith gives us a world of sirens and hardships. That makes survival for X seem unlikely only to supported and bonded with Miles.

Great short story on X and finding the will to carry on while on the surface!

How can you not love it!

I really wish this could have been a full length story, or at the very least a half length one.

Far too short, but great to hear R C Bray one last time!

I absolutely adore the HD series. And this was just a delight after NSS announced 12 was the last in the HD series. (Silently cries)
Wonderful novella, really bringing that relationship of X & Miles to life.
Normally I give 5 stars, but I feel that this should have had more time. I understand it’s a novella, however, the story was just getting good, then it ended so soon.
I would’ve been happy to wait another 6 months for a longer version. Especially with the time on the surface articulated in book 2.
I’m not alone in these thoughts. :(

Aside from the length, another perfect performance from RC, amazing writing from NSS.

(PLEASE keep writing HD)

Great to have X & Miles back

Fits seamlessly into the help divers world.. but $14 for a book that barely qualifies as a short story? Have to say I felt ripped off

Far too short

Mr Bray awesome as always .
Mr Smith more helldivers is always good.
but I must say at 14.95 I do feel short changed.
got a feeling this is part 1 of 2 .
if so make it up to us via free part 2 then sell them at 14.95 for both..

far to short for $$
