About this listen

Jack Audley has been a highwayman.

A soldier. And he has always been a rogue. What he is not, and never wanted to be, is a peer of the realm, responsible for an ancient heritage and the livelihood of hundreds. But when he is recognized as the long-lost son of the House of Wyndham, his carefree life is over. And if his birth proves to be legitimate, then he will find himself with the one title he never wanted: Duke of Wyndham.

Grace Eversleigh has spent the last five years toiling as the companion to the dowager Duchess of Wyndham. It is a thankless job, with very little break from the routine...until Jack Audley lands in her life, all rakish smiles and debonair charm. He is not a man who takes no for an answer, and when she is in his arms, she's not a woman who wants to say no. But if he is the true duke, then he is the one man she can never have....

A Great Reader of a Wonderful Story

That grandmother is a one off. No matter what she always endeavours to get her own way and the way she went about grabbing her missing grandson surprised me. However, by the end of the story she’s finally been put into her place. The narrator always makes the most of the characters in her special way. I look forward to listening to another of Julia‘S stories soon.

Not One But Two

Since finishing the entire Bridgerton, Belvestoke and their series offshoots I have been waiting for and wanting more. I devoured this and the book following - featuring Two heroes, two points of view, no actual villain, surprise twist in each main characters’ stories - a slight variation on the usual formula - in two days. The second part practically writes itself. Love love love this narrator’s work.

Egg or Chicken - either/or

As per the sentiments expressed in my review of the sister book 'Mr Caversham, I Presume' which I listened to first, i found this version of the same story somewhat redundant. You could get away with listening to one or the other to arrive at the same conclusion - the differing POVs not being riverting enough to justify 2 books.

I also didn't think the characters were balanced compared to the other book. In this one Amelia was a bit of a stubbed toe.

Frankly whilst the narration was good, I did prefer the other to this one.

I wonder if my opinion would've been any difference had I listened to this one first.

An excellent story

Loved this story. Very different characters and unusual story line. It’s nicely paced and enjoyable. Held my interest all the way. I really liked Jack and Grace. A brilliant ending. The best. The only thing I would have liked to have seen was a bit of vulnerability and character development of the grandmother. She stayed very two dimensional. Apart from that it’s a ten star story one of my favourites.
