About this listen
Continuing the story begun in The Hobbit, this is the first part of Tolkien’s epic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings.
Sauron, the Dark Lord, has gathered to him all the Rings of Power – the means by which he intends to rule Middle-earth. All he lacks in his plans for dominion is the One Ring – the ring that rules them all – which has fallen into the hands of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins.
In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care. Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.

Not the right narrator
Fantastic and mesmerising classic novel however I’m not convinced that Rob Inglis is the most appropriate narrator. Not enough distinction between characters and a metre at times that just doesn’t fit.

Love the voice and the singing
I’ve registered to this so many times and I love this performance including the singing and poems (which took me a little longer to warm up to).

My favourite narrator of the series.
What is there to say other than how much I like the narrator. There are not many people here, I imagine, that are unfamiliar with the story of The Lord of the Rings, and as such I won’t bother to give much attention to that.
What I will say is that if you are a fan of the movies, the books are fantastic in that they explain so much more and give vast amounts of depth on things you’d never have even thought about.
Moving on; the narration on this version is my favourite.
Is it perfect? No. I do take issue with how Aragorn is voiced, but only slightly. It doesn’t detract from the reading at all, it just doesn’t fit how I feel about the character, I guess.
Other than that, the narrator of this book (Rob Inglis) sings each and every song as written in the book. To hear these songs - even one in Elven - sung to a proper tune… really breaths life into the world.
I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to delve into the audio book form of the series.

it's an lotr book, it's long
I really enjoyed it. Could it have done with an abridged version of the songs? quite possibly. but it might have detracted from the charm.
I can't fault the narration; excellent dramatisation.

Classic
A really solid and beautifully read audiobook. Clearly the reader is an avid fan, pronouncing the strange words correctly and singing the songs really brings the story to life.
