About this listen
Former Chief Inspector of Homicide, Armand Gamache, has found a peace he'd never imagined possible, away from the front line of the police and in the tranquil village of Three Pines. But when his friend Clara Morrow asks for help, he can't bring himself to refuse her, despite the old wounds it threatens to re-open. Clara's husband, Peter, is missing, having failed to come home on the first anniversary of their separation, as promised.
As Gamache journeys further into Quebec, he is drawn deeper into the tortured mind of Peter Morrow, a man so desperate to recapture his fame as an artist that he would sell his soul. As Gamache gets closer to the truth, he uncovers a deadly trail of jealousy and deceit. Can Gamache bring Peter, and himself, home safely? Or in searching for answers, has he placed himself, and those closest to him, in terrible danger . . .
From number one New York Times best-selling author, Louise Penny, comes an evocative, immersive novel brimming with atmosphere and heart-stopping suspense - her most ingenious novel to date.

Too long winded
I love the characters, and the story lines however, this one (The Long Way Home), seemed to go on and on before they found Peter.
It was a little too far fetched with the way the law shares too much information with the public. A good ending though, so sad, but good.

Disappointing
I’m a fan of this series but I didn’t enjoy this one as much! The mystery wasn’t as complex as previous books and at times, I lost interest!

Another Wonderful Addition to the Series.
I absolutely love this series. This story sees Gamache resigned from the police force and living in Three Pines when he is asked to help find a missing friend. What I love most about this series is the way the characters are built on with each book and the fact that the demons from the past are never too far away. I am hoping that there will be another installment, as I want to have these wonderful characters in my life for a bit longer.

Disappointing
This has the weakest plot and least feasible storyline of all these books. Generally they get richer but this asbestos story is ludicrous.

Different but great!
I read a review of this book before I started it, and it was not overly positive - said there was no real story and there was too much dialogue about art. That being the case, I wondered what I was in for. I needn't have worried - this story is absolutely up to Louise's excellent standard. Is it her typical murder mystery? No. However, the many and varied discussions about art - and how people respond to and create that art - revealed a lot about the characters we know and love. You can have the best plot in the world - but if you don't care about the characters there is no point. And I adore the world of people Louise has created. All I can say is bring on book 11! Footnote - Adam Sims' narration is superb.

Not the usual Louise Penny
I love the previous Inspector Gamache/Three Pines mysteries, but this one seemed to go on and on before the tension of the final chapters really drew me in. Also, a different narrator read this book, which also diminished the appeal. When you have listened to a series of books read by one person and then suddenly have a different narrator - it just doesn't feel right.

Art for Plot's Sake
While always a delight to follow Gamache as he picks up the killer's scent, The Long Way Home feels like a more arduous uphill trudge than a downhill slalom. The story hinges on the detective's ability to decode a series of paintings - and unusually for Penny - the images fail to take shape in the reader's mind as do the author's attempts to decipher any clues they might hold. The artist Clara takes the lead in this investigation - a trope which proves to be as frustrating as it is unlikely. Probably, my least favourite of the series so far.

Too much chat.
This Louise Penny book ( number 10) was quite tedious. l have enjoyed the first 9 in the series but this book was all talk and too much navel gazing.
