About this listen

Nobody knows the seedy underbelly of Las Vegas like Daniel Faust, a sorcerer for hire and ex-gangster who uses black magic and bullets to solve his clients' problems. When an old man comes seeking vengeance for his murdered granddaughter, what looks like a simple job quickly spirals out of control.

Soon Daniel stands in the crossfire between a murderous porn director; a corrupt cop with a quick trigger finger; and his own former employer, a racket boss who isn't entirely human. Then there's Caitlin: brilliant, beautiful, and the lethal right hand of a demon prince.

A man named Faust should know what happens when you rub shoulders with demons. Still Daniel can't resist being drawn to Caitlin's flame as they race to unlock the secret of the Etruscan Box, a relic that people all over town are dying - and killing - to get their hands on. As the bodies drop and the double-crosses pile up, Daniel will need every shred of his wits, courage, and sheer ruthlessness just to survive.

Daniel Faust knew he was standing with one foot over the brink of hell. He's about to find out just how far he can fall.

Best thing since Dresden!

When I finally caught up with The Dresden files I tried a few different series trying to fill the void left behind. And now finally I've found Daniel Faust. Thank you Craig Schaefer. Bought the next 3 books before I even got to the end of this one..

decent first half then goes of the rails

I was craving a good Urban Fantasy after finishing Dresden Files and was recommend this. While the first half was pretty good a dark detective story about a murdered porn star involved in some messed up stuff. With Faust going undercover to find out more.

Where it starts to come undone is the romance, by god is it bad. The love interest is a succubus who was forced into a contract with the main suspect in the murder. Faust decided to abandon his plan because they were abusive to the hell spawn so he destroys her contract letting a incredibly dangerous demon loose possibly killing him. She doesn't and later joins up with him in the investigation. Now if it stayed plutonic it would have worked well working with an unsure ally is good drama and tension.

It does not do this. Faust repeatedly says he is drawn to her by something(I'm paraphrasing cant remember what exactly it was) this along with him making really dumb decisions when she is involved. I had assumed that is what was being built up but no it was love and the demon of hell felt the same.

He introduces her to his found family and says before hand to the succubus if they object he will cut ties with them. The family of course accept it because they can see they love each other after knowing each other for around a day or two. This is not the way the character that was set up would act. A guy who is in his 30s, spent time in the mafia and left because of his shady half demon boss is acting like a 16 year old who saw a girl naked for the first time
