Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The best-selling author of A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility and master of absorbing, sophisticated fiction returns with a stylish and propulsive novel set in 1950s America.

In June, 1954, 18-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served 15 months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car. Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett's future, one that will take them all on a fateful journey in the opposite direction - to the city of New York.

Spanning just 10 days and told from multiple points of view, Towles' third novel will satisfy fans of his multi-layered literary styling while providing them an array of new and richly imagined settings, characters and themes.

Amor Towles the magnificent

A mesmerising tour de force of a story, rich in characters, rich in the telling and rich in the baritone of its narrator.
A rollicking journey for reader and character alike.

Wonderfully read - excellent grasp of character

Wonderfully read - The read had an excellent grasp of character and the reading added so much to my enjoyment of this novel. I had read it a few months ago as a hardcover book, and ‘read’
it again via this excellent audio version. Not every book lends itself to being listened to, but this one certainly does. An engaging book and a talented reader. Quite a different experience, though, from “A Gentleman in Moscow” - which is one of my favourite books.

Genius story telling, savour slowly

Literary writing at its best. Such depth in exploring disparate 3D characters in an unfamiliar decade, and so wonderfully narrated. This is another tale to savour and enjoy and not rush through to see what happens next, though you’ll want to. Can’t wait to read the next and the next of Towles’ works. Loved every minute.

Intriguing

I can’t agree with the negative reviews that it was a story not worth listening to. In the middle of the book I began to feel that there were too many diversions, but as it unrolled the reasons for these became clear. It was a story of unlikely main characters all with at least one basic fault which had caused or would cause their downfall; that is, all except Billy, who actually thought things through and was responsible for his and his brother’s redemption. The was very different from Amor Towles’ other two books. It was expansive. A Gentleman in Moscow was almost entirely set in one building whereas The Lincoln Highway abounded with places and characters. Such a fantastic author who will, it seems, never write a formulaic novel!

A monumental read

Loved this book and performances, and especially loved the gorgeously hewn characters and their moxie. And the self reliance and resilience of kids who were hard-done by their parents.
Highly recommended.
