About this listen
London, 1964
Psychopathic gangster Ronnie Kray has a “list” of persons who have “taken liberties” and who are to be disposed of, and now barrister Charles Holborne finds his name at the top of the list. He can’t spend his life looking over his shoulder, but how to take the fight to the two most violent gangsters in London?
There seems no obvious danger in taking the murder brief that good fortune lands on his desk. But the accused is the Lighterman...a man with whom Charles has history....
“An excellent thriller, with the Kray twins providing a palpable sense of menace in the background, great action on the river and some gripping courtroom drama.” (Crime Review)
“There is a hint of John le Carré in this tough legal thriller that packs a punch as the reader is swept along towards a fascinating conclusion.” (Dorset Book Detective)
“Vivid, gripping and authentic storytelling...Simon Michael’s best thriller yet.” (Robert Daws)
"One of the key attractions of Simon's Charles Holborne series is the depiction of London, in all it gangland glamour and swinging 60s glory. He brings the past back to life across a beautifully rendered 60s landscape, and delivers a thrilling piece of thriller fiction that will excite any fan of the genre." (Book2Book)

Author plays Narrator and Ruins the experience
Oh no! Narrator changed! Why do authors want to play thespian? Colin Mace did a phenomenal job with the previous two. Am so disappointed, almost want to return it. Leave the performance to the professionals, for goodness sake. Having now finished listening, I must acknowledge the correct pronunciation of the Hebrew and Yiddish this time. Love this series, more please, Audible.

A great listen
I’m enjoying knowing this series is based on actual events. And I love that it is set in the 60’s. This book also gives us more insight into Charles past.
The change in narrator was a surprise but I soon got used to it. It’s unusual to hear the author narrate the book but I liked it.

Very enjoyable
As with book 1 and book 2 the story was good and the legal aspects and court room procedures were very interesting.

Outstanding
I'm so enjoying this series. Subtle, compelling, and extremely informative of the Kray's domination of London crime in the 1960s. Colin Mace is a superb narrator, lending his acting talent to this exceptional performance. I'm thrilled to have stumbled on both Mace and Michael. Highly recommended if you enjoy historical and legal crime novels.

Change of narrator to dismal
I adored the first 2 books in the series - the content amazing and the narrator even better. Now tho the author has replaced the original narrator and it’s dreadful. Cannot bear to continue with what is most likely a great story. Why on earth did the author do this? I

Narration is boring and Monotonous
After thoroughly enjoying the first 2 books in this series I was looking forward to listening to this book, however the Narration by the author sounded so disinterested he could have been reading the phonebook, I gave it away after 2 hours. extremely disappointed
