Even better than the first

Enjoyed the first book in this trilogy (The Blackhouse) so much, I was almost reluctant to read the second in case it was disappointing. I just did t see how he could do better.
Happily, I was wrong. Superb writing (again), a fascinating cast of characters, some new, some known, the glorious background of the islands in the north of Scotland with descriptions so alive and so lyrical it makes me want to go there.
And then there is the superb narration of Peter Forbes, who never lets his narration get between you and the book. Who reads in a way that the Gaelic and Scots words roll from his tongue , heightening the pleasure. Loved it. A superb writer paired with a superb narrator - what a magnificent pairing. I’d listen to just about anything from these two.

Wonderful Read

Loved this story - fantastic performance by Peter Forbes and such details of a life in the Hebrides that most of us don’t know. Thoroughly recommend on all counts.

Intriguing Storyline

Intriguing storyline that has relevance to changes to generational norms and resultant exposed hypocrisy. The personal drama twists and turns with a climatic ending. The narration is understated (but very appropriate)leaving the words to tell the story.

Touched my Soul !

Would you consider the audio edition of The Lewis Man to be better than the print version?

Yes. The audio version allows the listener to become completely immersed in the story without the distraction of the physical presence of a book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Lewis Man?

Without giving too much away, the long awaited reunion at the end.

What does Peter Forbes bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Peter Forbes narration adds such depth to the characters and brings them alive much more so than the written word, but that doesn't in any way take away from Peter Mays poignant writing.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The whole story moved me greatly, firstly because it compared closely with my own grandfathers history, born in 1899 and being placed, illegitimate and unwanted into the poorhouse on the Isle of Mull and then raised in a blackhouse with a farmers family in the small settlement of Suidhe, the ruins of which still stand today near Bunessan, Mull. Secondly, my own Mum, aged 89 is deteriorating with dementia and, like Tormid, becoming confused and losing her sense of self. Peters words demonstrated so clearly what Mum must be going through.

Any additional comments?

I will listen to this story time and time again, and never tire of it. Saying a simple thank you to the author and narrator seems such an inadequate form of gratitude for such a wonderful gift.
