About this listen
This is DC Smith's third investigation with the Diver and Diver Associates agency. They have been asked by a member of Norfolk's aristocracy to look into the tragic death of her younger brother, Freddie, the late Lord Thorpe of the title. The inquest verdict was of misadventure, but it isn't long before Smith begins to suspect there has been a serious miscarriage of justice.

Great!
I love all the DC Smith books. They are smart and engaging. I almost want a related book that follows the police investigation. The narration was, as ever, excellent. The Kings Council voice a hoot! Can’t wait for the next book.

Beautifully written and sublime narration.
The Smith books are a bitter sweet pleasure. Always beautifully written and the most glorious of narrator’s voices.
As always the hours passed too quickly.

The best yet
I really didn’t want to interrupt my reading of this book. It was absolutely riveting and the details of the investigation were superb.
The narration was first class as usual.
Thus us the best book in the series.

The subtle writing with so much depth on every page.
I have listened to all of Peter Grainger’s books (including his non Smith ones) and this latest novel continues the very excellent series, expanding some new characters, adding much interest. Of course the references to past happenings, while not essential to this story line, always add to the enjoyment as you are drawn back with much satisfaction. It really feels as though ‘one is with old friends’ having shared so much. Gildart Jackson’s narration is superb as always…just the right pace and intonation and such consistent accents. I missed Waters and the rest of the old team, but of course it’s beautifully setup for the next novel as hopefully, the story line reverts back to Kings Lake and we find out who was responsible for the happenings in this book.

A joy to listen to, and as always, finishing leaves you missing Smith intensely.
As always Peter Grainger masterfully involves you in the life of this extraordinary, warm, disarmingly dear character. The plot in this latest book is clever and, as with all in this series, addictive.
Loved this one, and hoping the author is at his desk finishing up his next .
Narration can be done by no one else.

Thoughtful crime procedural
Peter Grainger’s books never disappoint and David Smith is a wonderful, believable character. The plots are intriguing, the characters are very well developed, the writing is compelling and the grammar impeccable. The narrator is perfect and brings the various characters to life, in particular, the main character of David Smith. I look forward to the next Peter Grainger novel, whether it is another David Smith or a spinoff.
