About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

As a child, Evan Smoak was plucked out of a group home, raised and trained as an off-the-books assassin for the government as part of the Orphan program. When he broke with the program and went deep underground, he left with a lot of secrets in his head that the government would do anything to make sure never got out.

When he remade himself as The Nowhere Man, dedicated to helping the most desperate in their times of trouble, Evan found himself slowly back on the government's radar. Having eliminated most of the Orphans in the program, the government will stop at nothing to eliminate the threat they see in Evan. But Orphan X has always been several steps ahead of his pursuers.

Until he makes one little mistake...

Now the President has him in her control and offers Evan a deal - eliminate a rich, powerful man she says is too dangerous to live and, in turn, she'll let Evan survive. But when Evan left the Program he swore to only use his skills against those who really deserve it. Now he has to decide what's more important - his principles or his life.

Not his best story

The villain is most worthy of Orphan X and his skills but the family he becomes entangled with is truly not. None of them are anything but caricatures of members of a liberal progressive family. Clueless, immature and overly emotional but supremely personally unaware. Evan deserves better. Nice to see Orphan V turning up again.

Didn't enjoy this one as much as the others

I was really looking forward to hearing this one but it was all pretty underwhelming. Missing was the humor and real connection I felt to the other stories. I hope the next one is better.

Against all odds, the best yet

if you had told me at this time last year that this book would be better than Dark Horse I wouldn't have believed you, but it is. Somehow Gregg Hurwitz keeps writing better and better stories around Evan, and Scott Brick just keeps bringing his best performance every time. Now behind the interminable wait for the next one.

The story continues to evolve

An enjoyable listen and familiarisation with past characters. Evan and Joey bring a sense of humanity to the violence of the book. Mia and Tommy are on the periphery but they are there. Like all past Orphan books I find them hard to not listen in huge chunks of time as I feel a sense of belonging to the characters. Always like the support of the underdog somehow making it through a difficult life experience. Luke is a somewhat different character in this book however he serves to build Evan’s character. I would have enjoyed a chance happening between Evan, Luke and the President. The reader is excellent and engages well with me. It seems real. I look forward to the next episode but please keep Evan apolitical as he lives by his code. Thanks for a great listen once again.

Didn’t feel long enough

I literally counted down the days until the release of this book. I absolutely love the Orphan series and all the characters. It’s like hanging out with old mates. Good story line but felt a tad lacking in something. Perhaps needed a parallel mission thrown in the mix. Still enjoyed every minute and the narrator is fantastic!! Can’t wait for the next book!

Sensitive and sensational

Love the return of Candy Joie and Tom
Love Tommy’s one liners and no nonsense

Good story but let down

I enjoyed the story but in my opinion the book was not up to the level of previous books in the series. The interminable boring descriptions of every situation and incident has not been in the previous books to this extent and they are better for it. I hope the next one goes back to the old format. That having been said the characters are great and the storyline good.

BackStory Centric

For anybody who has followed the Orphan X series this is a major disappointment. There is so much back story that you don't need to read the rest of the series. The story is disjointed & wat outside the 'normal operations' of Orphan X previously.....extremely disspointing

disappointing

not as good as previous in series. I found the narrator to be so annoying in his high emotionality that I nearly gave up a few times. re the plot - I find the moral justification for psychopathic behaviour, as often portrayed in films/series gut wrenching - as long as violence is justified in their eyes, rules can be ignored - like Israel in Gaza as I write this, or by U.S invading Iraq 20 years ago. I won't be getting anymore by Hurwitz
