About this listen
THE NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER A heartbreaking read of loss and hope from Laura Pearson
The list he left had just one item on it. Or, at least, it did at first…
Mabel Beaumont’s husband Arthur loved lists. He’d leave them for her everywhere. ‘Remember: eggs, butter, sugar’. ‘I love you: today, tomorrow, always’.
But now Arthur is gone. He died: softly, gently, not making a fuss. But he’s still left her a list. This one has just one item on it though: ‘Find D’.
Mabel feels sure she knows what it means. She must track down her best friend Dot, who she hasn’t seen since the fateful day she left more than sixty years ago.
It seems impossible. She doesn’t even know if Dot’s still alive. Also, every person Mabel talks to seems to need help first, with missing husbands, daughters, parents. Mabel finds her list is just getting longer, and she’s still no closer to finding Dot.
What she doesn’t know is that her list isn’t just about finding her old friend. And that if she can admit the secrets of the past, maybe she could even find happiness again…
A completely heartbreaking, beautiful, uplifting story, guaranteed to make you smile but also make you cry. Perfect for fans of A Man Called Ove, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, and The Keeper of Stories.

What a beautiful book this is!
Perfect narrated, this sweet and balanced story of Mabel Beaumont touched my heart. So sad that such love was not embraced and nurtured in youth but how lucky she was to find it.

Beautifully written and narrated. Had me hooked from the first chapter. Not the type of book I would normally purchase or read, however I had a tear as well a heart full of love for friendship.

Good contrast of past & present cultures
If you enjoy character-driven fiction and a varied cast of characters, this is definitely worth reading. I particularly liked the fact it wasn’t overly sentimental despite dealing with some challenging topics.

Nothing not to like about this book loved it
Well written heartwarming story and expertly narrated. Exploring generational differences and similarities when it comes to love and the many guises love takes, a book about living a life , which includes loss, hope, courage , friendships, and the impact and need for human interaction. A story that subtly inspires, and motivates and reassures.

Uneventful and so disappointing
I was keen to read this book based on reviews. It turned out to be a very long dialogue of an elderly lady reliving endless past uncertainties and her lack of confidence on just about everything in her life. I read til the end hoping for a breakthrough to something better ... but nothing. The narration waa various characters by same narrator ... pooor. Do not recommend
