About this listen

Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Two centuries after the Confederation staved off an invasion by the robotic Locusts, Captain Jack Romanoff faces mandatory retirement from an ever-shrinking navy. Actions speak louder than words. The Confederation doesn’t think the Locusts are coming back.

But what if the politicians are wrong?

Snared in a scheme he doesn’t fully understand or trust, Jack gets his promotion, but it comes with a catch. With a crew of rejects, he must restore the most powerful warship humanity has ever built, after centuries of neglect and decay, before time runs out.

If he fails, humanity might not need to worry about history repeating itself ever again.

Great book for an old man. Love it.

Good logistical based story. If you are tired of the gung ho super soldiers then give this a try.

Don't be mistaken, this is absolute pulp science fiction but highly enjoyable pulp at that.

And as always Jeffery Kafer does a great job. Kudos for being a member of Sag-Aftra.

OK- so time for my second opinion: The first book was good enough, but as the series progresses it really averages out. It's full of one dimensional characters, each and every one a "one trick pony" which together makes an OK circus. But the biggest fault is that by book 3 it becomes very easy to passively phase out of the story requiring back tracking of 30 - 60 minutes listening. This would cause my criticism to be along the lines of 'uninspiring', run of the mill etc.

Although it's really not fair to criticise the pulp you enjoy for being too pulpy, this is where I am at by book 5. It kind of becomes an unoffensive droning noise instead of an enjoyable escape. Book 1 was still enjoyable and provided this escape but the series does flounder after that.

Solid but sluggish space opera

As with my previous Chaney book, The Last Hunter has some good ideas but is let down by a sluggish narrative. This is book 1 or lord knows how many, but for me, it's way too pedestrian. The characters are solid and the ideas are in there somewhere. Kafer does a good job, but even he sounded bored at times.
