About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The audiobook of The Last Continent is read by Colin Morgan (Merlin; Testament of Youth; Belfast). BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.

'Anything you do in the past changes the future. The tiniest little actions have huge consequences. You might tread on an ant now and it might entirely prevent someone from being born in the future.'

Rincewind, inept wizard and reluctant hero, has found himself magically stranded on the Discworld's last continent.

It's hot. It's dry. There was this thing once called The Wet, which no one believes in any more. Practically everything that's not poisonous is venomous. But it's the best bloody place in the world, all right?

And in a few days, it will die. The only thing standing between the last continent and wind-blown doom is Rincewind, and he can't even spell wizard. Still...no worries, eh?

he Last Continent is the sixth book in the Wizards series, but you can listen to the Discworld novels in any order. The first book in the Discworld series—The Colour of Magic—was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

Really enjoyed

I’m Australian and I really enjoyed this, exaggerated accents and all! And a dig at Aussie culture - no worries mate!

Disappointing.

I love pratchett’s mode of storytelling but the accents in this just made me want to cry. As a ausie myself, I know what we sound like, and an American reading this makes such a mess.

Horrible fake XXXX (Australian) accents.

The horrible fake XXXX (Australian) accents spoiled it for me. Surely you could have found a legit Australian voice actor. Sir Terry went to some lengths to parody Australian idiosyncrasies, it’s a pity the voices were so unauthentic.
When we read these wonderful books, we imagine the voices from the careful way Sir Terry wrote. Unfortunately the narration generally let a great setting down.

The accents

I don’t think the narrator has ever met an Australian, they are so bad it’s almost unenjoyable.

Poking great fun at Australian culture (?)

The performance was superb. Wonderful mastery of voices and accents and personalities. The story made great use of poking fun at Australian culture. It might be a little bit hard for non-Australians to follow parts of it but this is another great Discworld novel. The personality of us Chancellor Ridcully comes out wonderfully in this book. Highly recommended.

No story, just cultural allusions

Normally clever cultural allusions and social criticism are what makes Pratchett’s books so good, but this time it is at the expense of a coherent plot. It is just a series of disjointed cultural references, very disappointing.

The only re record I’ve really struggled with

I understand the need to update the quality of the recordings of Sir Terrys book but this one was a complete miss step. The narrator just isn’t the right choice for this book. As an Aussie this is one of my favourites but this just isn’t a good retelling. Only re record I’m giving less then 4-5 stars. Loved the original recording Nigel planer just nailed it.

Waste of a credit :-(

I’ve no qualms with Sir Terry and his storytelling.

My rating is all about Penguin’s mystifying decision to produce these updated recordings using several narrators instead of just one.

Having them overlapping each other with their own “theme jingle” constantly being played throughout the reading.

I did it to be completely unnecessary, interrupts the natural flow of the story and stops it being something you’re able to close your eyes, relax and listen to.

For me, Stephen Briggs’ original performances of several Discworld books remain the gold standard, despite the audio quality not being up to modern standards.

I genuinely couldn’t listen to more than 5mins in, the interruptions were so annoying.

Disappointed

I’m usually pretty happy with most books but I just couldn’t get into the story. The narrator was a bit boring and the accents and characters all sounded the same. Maybe I’ll give it another listen in the future.
