About this listen

Exclusively from Audible

In the last and most complex of the Barsetshire audiobooks, many of Trollope's best-loved characters appear, but the mood of the recording is darker and more uneasy than in earlier volumes.

At the heart of the audiobook is the penniless Reverend Josiah Crawley, first encountered in Framley Parsonage, who in the opening of the story is accused of theft, creating a public scandal that threatens to tear the community apart. As well as this central mystery we find Johnny Eames attempting to woo Lily Dale and the now grown-up Major Henry Grantly falling in love with Reverend Crawley's daughter, Grace, against the wishes of his father, the Archdeacon. The Bishop Proudie and his formidable wife also receive their most dramatic portrayal with Mrs. Proudie finally meeting her match.

This final volume manages to resolve many threads started in the first volume and is a fitting conclusion to the series.

The Last Chronicle of Barset is considered by many, including Trollope himself, to be his best work. A prolific and respected novelist of the 19th-century he created 47 novels and many short stories that have continued to be popular and well-loved.

One of the best

A great reading of a great story. The Last Chronicle is a beautiful drawing together of the threads running through The Chronicles of Barsetshire. Timothy West's reading and characterisation is masterful.

Review

It was superbly read and superbly written . On both aspect it is fantastic
I love the reader's voice and envy his talent for taking on characters - there are others readers who are also blessed with this talent. We do need an Oscar type award and ceremony.?

A fitting conclusion

I have now listened to the complete Chronicles of Barsetshire, as read by Timothy West. These books have been my valued companion during the COVID-19 restrictions, and Timothy West’s gentle and humane cadences have often helped shape my thoughts. If you have read the previous books in the series then of course you will read this one, and will be well rewarded for your attention. If you are new to the series I would suggest that you start at the beginning, as I don’t know that this would work nearly as well as a stand-alone novel.
I have returned to Trollope over many years, for his humanity, his dry humour, his wonderful and believable characters, his respect for the beauty or poignancy of the small things in life. This time I have listened, rather than read, and I am grateful to Timothy West for the care and insight of his reading.

Good reading of a dated classic

I used to enjoy Trollope with his pompous clergy and their manipulative wives, one in particular. However, I found several of the major characters unbelievable in their harsh attitudes, and the main character almost ridiculous in accepting the exaggeration of his supposed crime. It is a very slender thing on which to hang a long novel like this. Timothy West read very well as usual.

Goodbye, dear friends

Trollope is so very interested in human nature, and though the characters are set in the mid 1880’s, and society had a rigid class structure and women were ruled by their husbands, they are recognisable and very human. I felt as if I knew them all and was very fond of them. The central issue concerns Reverend Crawley, who lives in dire poverty in the ill-paid living of Hogglestock. He has a devoted wife and two adoring daughters. He is accused of stealing a cheque for £20 and has no firm memory of how he acquired it. There is to be a trial and he feels utterly disgraced and lives in misery. I think he’s selfish and doesn’t think enough about his family, who suffer also. His daughter has been courted by Major Henry Grantly son of the Archdeacon, one of my favourite characters. He is against the marriage, but, of course, softens later. Sub-plot of John Eames courtship of Lily Dale who was jilted by Adolphus Crosbie but still loved him. I think Lily is stubborn and there could have been a happy ending for her. No sympathy wasted. Many more characters and the dreadful Mrs Proudie has a fitting ending. So much, so much enjoyment, enormously enhanced by the reading of Timothy West.
