About this listen

A missing child … June 1933, and the Edevane family’s country house, Loeanneth, is polished and gleaming, ready for the much-anticipated Midsummer Eve party. Alice Edevane, sixteen years old and a budding writer, is especially excited. Not only has she worked out the perfect twist for her novel, she’s also fallen helplessly in love with someone she shouldn’t. But by the time midnight strikes and fireworks light up the night skies, the Edevane family will have suffered a loss so great that they leave Loeanneth forever.

An abandoned house … Seventy years later, after a particularly troubling case, Sadie Sparrow is sent on an enforced break from her job with the Metropolitan Police. Sadie retreats to her beloved grandfather’s cottage in Cornwall but soon finds herself at a loose end. Until one day, she stumbles upon an abandoned house surrounded by overgrown gardens and dense woods and learns the story of a baby boy who disappeared without a trace.

An unsolved mystery… Meanwhile, in the attic writing room of her elegant Hampstead home, the formidable Alice Edevane, now an old lady, leads a life as neatly plotted as the bestselling detective novels she writes. Until a young police detective starts asking questions about her family’s past, seeking to resurrect the complex tangle of secrets Alice has spent her life trying to escape.

So many stories woven into one exquisitely

Just about every character in this book, has a story of intrigue that melds into one story, although there is a background story that plays its part. I will have to read it again to capture the many facets there- in. I love Kate Mortons eloquence, and turn of phrase She draws pictures with her words; quite lovely.

JUST WONDERFUL

I picked up this book as an audible ‘book of the day’ and was pleasantly surprised. This story unfolds over generations and decades, characters evolving and revealing themselves as the pages turn. Twists and turns, beauty and sorrow all play out as not one but a few mysteries intertwine and reveals themselves as the story comes to a close. Such an in-depth, detailed and beautifully written story. It was an incredible ride and would totally recommend this book for anyone that lites a good rounded, entertaining novel.

A sophisticated and beautifully written tale

I loved the writing and the complexity of this story. It is an interesting and intriguing tale that kept me chasing the ending. The characters are well written also, keeping it all believable and yet a story after all. I loved this book as I always do with Kate Morton’s books.

Terrific long read multi twists and turns

Another enjoyable rigmarole with perhaps a bit much unnecessary background to some of the characters, but constructed and read in a relaxing and enjoyable manner - really enjoyed it and am off to hunt for another by Kate Moreton

Disappointing ending

I couldn’t wait for opportunities to leap back into this book each day but was disappointed at the a last gasp by too many unpredictable “coincidences” Still… a great read immersed in some of the best evocative language I’ve ever come across.

Intriguing and Addictive

A wonderful touching mystery with lots of unexpected twists. I found it easy to connect to the characters and to visualise the different settings. Kate Morton obviously does a significant amount of research to make her stories appear so historically possible. I loved the journey and am disappointed it is over, I wish there was more. It was beautifully read, adding to the atmosphere.
