About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Francine Rivers returns to the California frontier in this sweeping, romantic tale of a displaced New England suffragette, a former Union soldier disinherited by his Southern family, and the town they join forces to save.

1875. When Kathryn Walsh arrives in tiny Calvada, a mining town nestled in the Sierra Nevadas, falling in love is the farthest thing from her mind. Banished from Boston by her wealthy stepfather, she has come to claim an inheritance from the uncle she never knew: a defunct newspaper office on a main street overflowing with brothels and saloons, and a seemingly worthless mine. Moved by the oppression of the local miners and their families, Kathryn decides to relaunch her uncle’s newspaper - and then finds herself in the middle of a maelstrom, pitted against Calvada’s most powerful men. But Kathryn intends to continue to say - and publish - whatever she pleases, especially when she knows she’s right.

Matthias Beck, owner of a local saloon and hotel, has a special interest in the new lady in town. He instantly recognizes C. T. Walsh’s same tenacity in the beautiful and outspoken redhead - and knows all too well how dangerous that family trait can be. While Kathryn may be right about Calvada’s problems, her righteousness could also get her killed. But when the handsome hotelier keeps finding himself on the same side of the issues as the opinionated Miss Walsh, Matthias’s restless search for purpose becomes all about answering the call of his heart. Everyone may be looking to strike it rich in this lawless boomtown, but it’s a love more precious than gold that will ultimately save them all.

loved it

This is the first audiobook I have listened to, but Francine Rivers is a long time favourite author of mine and this book has not left me wanting.
It is an amazing story and I couldn't stop listening 🎧
The reading was well done too, it was a real person, which was great and she had that southern drawl down ☺️
The only issue I noticed was that every now and then the playing would just suddenly skip a few seconds for no reason and even if you went back it didn't fix it up.

Such a lovely book!

Francine Rivers didn’t disappoint. The storyline was captivating and simply lovely. I love realistic and good endings especially in the world we are currently find ourselves in. It is good to be taken away from everyday life to the early days. Highly recommended.

Lovely as always

Predictably strong and interesting storyline. Doesn’t shy away from real life issues, but spares you the gratuitous violence and swearing.

A delightful story beautifully written !

A delightful love story with a fascinating heroine. It is written at a time when women enjoyed few rights and were considered men's property. Francine, the author, depicts with insight how this injustice towards the female sex affected girls with intelligence, insight and self-drive, such as our heroine.

I also loved the portrayal of her faith and its impact upon those around her and in overcoming some of her own struggles.

Well worth a listen to!

Worth Waiting For!

Another great read by Francine Rivers!
The story holds romance, history, suspense - in fact the latter had me tempted on occasions to turn to the end and check that all would be well! I’m glad I resisted.
There’s also great character development. Just a thoroughly good story. I loved having the epilogue at the end too - thanks Francine!
A minor complaint: I would’ve loved the narration to be more than a female voice. It loses something when it’s a man speaking from the story with a female’s voice.

Great story

I loved listening to this story. In fact, I’ve just finished listening for the second time. Though it is a classic love story with a strong willed heroine and an equally capable and challenging opponent, I thoroughly enjoyed their growing respect for each other based on trust, moral values and spiritual guidelines. I enjoyed the humour and historical challenges of the time.
