Publisher's Summary

Britain is under New Management. The disbanding of the Laundry - the British espionage agency that deals with supernatural threats - has culminated in the unthinkable: an elder god in residence in 10 Downing Street.

But in true 'the enemy of my enemy' fashion, Mhari Murphy finds herself working with His Excellency Nylarlathotep on foreign policy - there are worse things, it seems, than an elder god in power, and they lie in deepest, darkest America.

A thousand-mile-wide storm system has blanketed the Midwest, and the president is nowhere to be found. Mhari must lead a task force of disgraced Laundry personnel into the storm front to discover the truth. But working for an elder god is never easy, and as the stakes rise, Mhari will soon question exactly where her loyalties really lie.

Story great, not keen on narrator

The story is just what I’d expect of a Laundry Files novel: fast paced, geeky creepy and a lot of fun. I just wish that for a story whose main characters are British, they could have got a narrator whose attempts at British accents were less cringeworthy. I still enjoyed listening to this book, but the awful "British" accents (that would likely only sound good to an American) were honestly a bit of a slog to my ears.

Terrible narrator

I am enjoying the series BUT needed to force myself to finish this one. I will not listen to any books by this grating narrator

Why did they change actors?

The accents were done so badly I couldn't finish. It was really off putting. How did anyone think this was good enough for release?

Great story, little quiet at times.

Volume level was a bit up and down, a bit too quiet at times. The story was great though and lots of accents.

Sadly not worth the effort.

The story is passable but not up tp Stross’’ usual standard. The narration is appalling; the attempted English accents make Dick van Dyck seem professional. The nuances and subtleties are lost and there seem to be some on the fly editing and translations into american. Diction and timing are inconsistent. The amateurish narration is compounded by post production standards , sound levels vary wildly even on single words. The end product is difficult to listen to and not very enjoyable.

Poor performance prevents pleasurable pastime

Distractingly bad accents and characterization make this listen a real chore. I love the Laundry Files, so I've really tried to get through the bad parts. Sadly I just can't do it.

Accents are intolerable

A pretty interesting story made unbearable by the constant use totally horrendous accents. I struggled to follow the pilot because of how distractingly poor the narrator is, and I had to force myself to complete it so I can try the next book. How on earth did this make it through the editing/approval process?
