About this listen

A ranger’s duty. The rotten heart of a king. Rebellion spilled from the blood of family.

Rew, the King’s Ranger, accepted a role on the far edge of the realm to avoid the morass of intrigue and betrayal that bleeds from the heart of the kingdom. His only desire is to shoulder the burden he’s taken, to protect the village of Eastwatch, and to monitor the wilderness beyond.

When three youths are arrested for petty theft in the village and beg for his help, Rew’s oldest friend insists he take responsibility for them. By ties stronger than steel, Rew is forced onto a path he knows leads to chaos and death. Through a resurgence of monsters summoned in ages prior, war between the royal line, and backstabbing treachery, the King’s Ranger will battle to grant the youths a life he never had a chance of.

But as they venture farther from the wilderness he calls home, Rew can feel the magical pull at the center of the kingdom, demanding he return to face his past and his family’s terrible legacy. Only he knows the secret of the king, and the risk it poses to the entire realm.

The King’s Ranger is a classic fantasy adventure, perfect for fans of Michael J Sullivan, Brent Weeks, James Islington, and AC Cobble’s Benjamin Ashwood Series.

Good

Enjoyable and well written story. Tho the nagging gets old. Anne seems to always claim they should do it another way without every giving input to what it should be

Slower to start but once you get in your hooked

Great listen, we'll worth the paper it is written on. The story builds and flows effortlessly from a slower start to a wide open story.

An ingenious adventure

Many interesting twists to the plot. Insightful reflections on the morality of killing others for the good of the many. The narrator gives credible character portrayals. A good read (listen).

great value, kept me interested and listening.

It is not the best book ever but I'm really enjoying it and the characters. It is well worth the purchase for the first 3 books and if you like them then there are another 3 for you to finish the series.

A Slog

sorry but unfortunately I struggled through this one. Respect the narrators effort but the story for me was just too slow moving and seemed very repetitive. 3 books and the king who is referred to repeatedly never makes an appearance. not the worst story but won't be pursuing any more from this saga.

A great Epic

I love this story but the narrator is irritating with his cadence, it makes it hard to follow and goes from quiet to aggressive.

So repetitive, I could not finish it.

I was disappointed in this offering from AC Cobble. I read and really enjoyed the Cartographer series so decided to dive into this boxset next.
I tried my best, listening to nearly 14 hours of it, and kept telling myself it would get better, but sadly it did not. Character development was virtually non existent, and the exposition was over done, the writer telling his readers on repeat, literally within a paragraph or two, that "Rew is the kings ranger" - obviously, as it's the title of the book and establised early on, no need to repeqtedly re-establish this fact. It was as though he was unsure of how to move the story along, so opted instead for repetitive expositon, a lead character with no depth who continually stated he "did not want to get involved" then continually involved himself in every aspect of what was going on, and lacklustre support characters. It was extremely frustrating to listen to. I rarely give up on a book once I've started, unfortunately this one will be left partially read forever.

Simon Vance is one of my top narrators, often Ill sample a book purely because he is reading it! He gave a good performance, but not his best. I'm unsure why he attempted American accents in this story, they felt "off" and were not as nice on the ear as Vance's usual offerings.
