About this listen

Aging Rock God Jim Sullivan is heading for the quiet life on his tiny newly acquired island, off the coast of Cornwall. That is until he sends a letter to the King of England, announcing his intent to declare independence from the UK and appointing himself king.

Determined not to cede one inch of British territory, the UK government dispatches low-level Foreign Office researcher John Cabot to put a stop to Sullivan's ambitions.

What they didn't anticipate was Cabot's tenacity for unearthing information they'd rather he didn't, or Sullivan's relentless, but completely unfounded, optimism in his own ideas.

Armed with nothing more than a guitar and a spreadsheet, can these two stand up to the might of the British Empire?

No contest.

Funny

Loved this book, so good to have a laugh probably due to being young in the early 70’s I could relate.

Light satire

The King of Scanlans Rock is yet another gem in the world of satirical literature. This light-hearted and funny novel offers readers a delightful escape while simultaneously engaging with deeper, underlying themes that resonate with a wide audience.

The story takes place in the whimsical world of Scanlans Rock, where absurdity reigns, and the characters’ escapades are as amusing as they are thought-provoking. The satire is clever without being heavy-handed, making the book both entertaining and subtly profound.

However, the performance, while generally strong, loses a star due to one notable issue. The male narrator’s portrayal of female characters is somewhat lacking, which detracts from the overall experience. While the narration is competent and engaging, the decision to have a male voice read the female parts creates a jarring effect that might take listeners out of the story at times. This issue is minor but noticeable enough to affect the overall enjoyment of the audiobook.

Despite this, The King of Scanlans Rock remains a highly recommended read for fans of satire. It’s a book that will leave you laughing, thinking, and perhaps even reflecting on the absurdities of our own world.
