About this listen
Jean:
The past has a way of catching up with you, even if you are immortal. I’ve spent thousands of years as the valet and companion to the powerful King of All Shifters. It has been my honor and duty to protect, serve, and advise him. I never intended to fall in love with him. My past is filled with death and bloodshed, but I never once regretted keeping Alarick safe. Now an evil I thought long gone has resurfaced, determined to kill Alarick and plunge the world into chaos. Saving Alarick means revealing the truth about myself. I don’t know what’s worse, failing to protect the king I love, or watching him turn away from me in disgust when he discovers what I really am.
King Alarick:
As King of All Shifters, my powers are connected to the cosmos, and I have been around since the dawn of time. There are few things that can kill me. Unfortunately, one of those things has escaped its prison and is set to destroy me. The only weapon that can defeat this creature is the Scythe of Kronos, which has been missing for nearly as long as I have lived. When Jean and I set out on a quest to find the scythe, questions I had long ignored must now be answered. What is Jean’s connection to this evil? Why will he trust me with his life but not his secrets? As my most trusted valet, and my greatest friend, surely nothing that happens along this perilous journey can change what I feel in my heart for him. Or can it?

A fantastic ending to the series
The King and his Vigilant Valet was a lovely way to round off this trilogy. An ancient evil has awoken, the only being in the world capable of killing the King of all Shifters, Alarick, and the race is on to first find a weapon that will kill this threat, and then devise a way to do it!
Despite the seriousness of the story, humour and romance abound, as Alarick oh so slowly recognises what everyone has known for eons, that he is in love with his valet, Jean. But what exactly is Jean and how does he know so much about this threat to Alarick’s life?
Greg Boudreaux does the narration for this story (he also narrated the first two books) and as usual, he’s done an amazing job, capturing Alarick and Jean’s personalities so well and giving them a unique voice. It was lovely to catch up with characters from the previous books such as Grimm, Owin, and Berend, and to be able to identify them immediately just from the voice and affectations used by the narrator.
This is a series that whilst it doesn’t take itself too seriously, it is impossible to not become invested in the characters and their adventures.
A fantastic story and an amazing narration equals a winning combination!

Light and fun with some nice action scenes!
Alarick, King of All Shifters, is in grave danger as a malevolent being seeks his death. His protector / adviser Jean must reveal long-hidden secrets about himself and the two of them must track down the only weapon capable of killing the being. Along the way, Alarick is forced to confront past missteps which have left some pissed off people - it’s lucky he has Jean to be diplomatic! There are some nice action scenes and laughs in this friends-to-lovers romance which is the series final. Like the previous books, this is a sweet and light fairytale: any obstacles resolve quickly with little angst and there’s a satisfyingly happy ending. I really enjoyed the supremely powerful and confident King Alarick having to deal with mistakes past and his attempts at apologies making things worse. Greg Boudreaux narrated the audio with heart and humour.
