Very good!
I think I made a mistake by listening to this book, the narrators just didn’t do it for me. Overall though, loved the storyline. So many jaw dropping moments.

A mixed experience
Audiobook review.
“Even with the clown-like makeup you could tell she was pretty - and had probably once been beautiful. Natural blonde hair, blue eyes and large breasts that she was showing off in a v-neck shirt and cardigan sweater.”
Get used to these descriptions, even from female characters the male gaze of the author makes itself evident. The unashamed ageism of this part “she was probably beautiful once”, was incredibly off-putting for me. As if at 35 a women is drained of her beauty. And the character who thought this is supposed to be somewhat sympathetic to us. But alas, these things pass by unnoticed (probably seem pedantic to you reading this, even), as it is so normal in our culture to treat older people as inferior, no longer capable of being beautiful (character mentioned is presumably only in her 30s / 40s no less, based on surrounding characters’ ages). There is no other context to account for her loss of beauty but age.
The voice actors are also unsuitable - ironically here, a 28 year old characters’ voice is played by someone much older and it is incredibly distracting due to the inconsistency. The voices don’t do the text any favours, although the text does possess some charm, aside from that aforementioned. Another actor insists on using old English pronunciation of /hw/ instead of the more natural /wh/… H-white, h-where, it’s relentless. The story itself is fine so far. I was hooked for a while there - but finding these other factors very distracting, and now contemplating a DNF at only halfway.

Unusual
Better than most mystery/thriller books, but i sometimes found myself bored with the main character.

One of the best reads of the year so far
A solid thriller. Was really easy to get into from the start. I would recommend to friends and anyone who liked books like The Nowhere Child, The Perfect Marriage and The Family Upstairs.

Dreadful voice casting
Unfortunately the voice casting for this is awful. Ted comes across as an ailing elderly man. Lily’s voice is stilted and she should be banned from ever attempting a British accent. The over accentuated /wh/ sounds are painful. None of the voices are age appropriate and are incredibly distracting from the plot. Mispronunciations are rife. Disappointing

Great twists!
Clever writing and good narration (although the male character sounded too old). Loved the ending!

Loved the story not the voices
I loved the story but the voices were unmatched to the characters. I am looking forward to the second book but I do hope the characters are matched to more age appropriate voices.
