Fabulous novel
Julie Brooks historical novel captured my imagination and I loved this fascinating story of modern day Eliza and her ancestor, Prue Merrifield.
In 2022 Eliza is gifted a Georgian pocket book belonging to Prudence. Prudence’s disappearance in 1838 in Somerset, England with suspected foul play, was a mystery that had troubled her family for generations.
Eliza had taken over her mother’s second hand shop after she died.
However, she had planned a career as an Investigative journalist and her keen eye for research allows her to follow the clues from the pocket book, old photos and family memorabilia, to discover more about Prudence.
Daniel, the Australian building contractor, restoring the family home, Wescott Hall and her Aunt Jude also become invested in assisting Eliza to discover what became of Prudence.
The morning after her father’s funeral at 35 years of age and unmarried, Prudence discovered at the reading of her father’s Will that she had been betrayed. She decided to set herself free and live an independent, brave life defying convention.
In 1833 Prudence and her maid. Bessie set sail across the world on a perilous journey where due to unforeseen circumstances she finds herself in Samoa in the South Pacific, Eventually after being found by Edward Ambrose and Bessie she returns to Wescott Hall with mixed feelings.
Julie Brooks sense of place is vividly described. From Somerst, England past and present to the Samoan islands, her detailed research gives a depth of understanding and a richness to the lives of Prudence and Eliza,
There are secrets and romance for both these women and Eliza feels a strong affinity with Prudence, the lady adventuress.
There are many twists and turns in the novel that are engrossing until the final revelation.
I found The Keeper a delightful, rewarding experience.
