About this listen

The Kaiju Preservation Society is John Scalzi's first stand-alone adventure since the conclusion of his New York Times best-selling Interdependency trilogy.

When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on.

What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, massive dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world. They're the universe's largest and most dangerous panda, and they're in trouble.

It's not just the Kaiju Preservation Society who's found their way to the alternate world. Others have, too. And their carelessness could cause millions back on our Earth to die.

This book is a pop song

I get the other reviews after listening to this book. Wil Wheaton does give a VERY enthusiastic performance from time to time, which does seem to make the dialogue somewhat childish and unrealistic. The story is not very in depth. After listening to the acknowledgements and the reasons behind this book I do get it. This book was meant to be light, like a pop song, helping us out of the dark period of Covid 19, protests and Trump. It is an easy listen, but I think I'll be happier with some of the earlier works by John Scalzi, which I will definitely be checking out.

Fun and light.

I really enjoyed KPS, its fun and light and typical Scalzi. Will Wheaten is at times a little over enthusiastic reading it but thats just him and it didnt bother me at all once i got into it. It feels a bit like Avatar in that you get a glimpse of a really interesting world but only a glimpse. I hope Scalzi goes back for another visit. Listen to the authors acknowledges too to at the end :-)

A good enjoyable read

Mostly impossible to put down. Plenty of nerdly Easter Eggs. Loved it! Can't wait for the movie. Thanks John & Wil, haven't had a good book like this for a while. Excellent performance.

Enjoyable and fun book, easy to get into with very likeable main characters, a hateable villain and an exciting world.

So much fun

This was a lot of fun to listen to. As always, the combination of author and narrator kicks arse.

Good pop story

I’ve read all of Scalzi and agree with the authors sentiments that this is not a brooding symphony.
That said, the story is fun, the characters are charming, and there is still a good amount of thought given to the technical aspects.

I loved Wil Wheaton’s reading of Ready Player One, and while I enjoyed his reading of this for the most part, it would’ve been nice to have some variation on accents and genders, as some of the dialogue gets muddy in the same voice and delivery. Notably one of the characters are British, and use British phrasing, but the character loses some of that charm when Wil gets excited and on a roll with delivery.

All in all a good listen though.

Wil Wheaton Nails It

This story is very much a B-Grade Kaiju movie with heart, however Wil Wheaton does a fantastic job reading it! Fun book, doesn’t take itself too seriously, easily recommended!

A great origin story

What a fantastic idea and such a great way to explain how we ended up with these giant creatures in our popular culture. John Scalzi always tells a good story and this is another example of 'out-there' ideas that just make perfect sense. I have always enjoyed the 'real' worlds created and the way that the characters simply get on with it within those worlds.
Such a fantastic performance (another one) by the great Will Wheaton who delivered this audio version with his usual expert eye for the delivery and the humour in it. This one was particularly interesting to me as it had a character from my home of New Zealand. Will's pronunciation of 'Kahurangi' and 'Aotearoa' made me very happy. So thank you Will for your great work.
You may get a sense from this review that I enjoyed this. Well I did and I recommend it highly.

the only John scalzi book I haven't loved

I struggled to finish this one. I've loved every single scalzi book he's written besides this one. couldn't pin point why. still a decent read.
