About this listen

When Alexandra returns to Australia to be with her dying grandfather, Wilhelm, and grandmother Romy, they share with her family secrets they had kept hidden for over 50 years.

In 1939, two young girls meet in Shanghai, the 'Paris of the East': beautiful local Li and Viennese refugee Romy. They form a fierce friendship, but the deepening shadows of World War Two fall over the women as they slip between the city's glamorous French Concession and the desperate Shanghai Ghetto. Eventually, they are forced to go in separate ways as Romy doubts Li's loyalties.

When Alexandra flies to Shanghai, determined to trace her grandparents' past, she peels back the layers of their hidden lives and soon begins to question everything she knows about her family - and herself.

Slow to get into this but once it hooked me…

What a brilliant story, well told and highly satisfying ending.
It’s sparked a desire to visit Shanghai one day, and another more urgent need to eat! The food was almost another character in this book - spicy broth, silken strands of tofu, bursts of flavour from ginger, garlic, chillies, spices. I wanted it all 😋
I found the narration distracting at times and would have been happier with a straight read, without the various accents of the characters.
This was my first Kirsty Manning and I’m off to the library to find more. Great read.

Wonderful Read

I absolutely loved this historical fiction book. I have read other books of this author and it is clear she does a lot of research to ensure the reader understands the times of the story

An incredibly strong book

I didn't know what to expect when I bought this book.
I loved it immensely. An incredibly strong book, showing real life/death/war; and the will to live a true experience.

Incredible

A brilliantly written story about ( for me) an unknown part of history based in Shanghai. So well described. So much horror and sadness but so well told. I loved it. Everyone should read this
