About this listen

Propulsive, terrifying and blade-sharp, The Island is the next thrilling adventure from the mastermind behind the award-winning global sensation The Chain, and a family story unlike any you've heard yet.

You should not have come to the island.

You should not have been speeding.

You should not have tried to hide the body.

You should not have told your children that you could keep them safe.

No one can run forever....

5 star story, 1 star narration

As an Australian, this narrator did the worst Australian accent I have ever heard. It’s frankly embarrassing that a publisher would put this in market because it’s physically painful to listen to. The story itself was a 4-5 star (it feels like Wolf Creek meets Wrong Turn and it was super fun!) and it pains me so much that his writing is being done a disservice by a lazy and/or unskilled narrator. Either get an Australian narrator or just have the whole thing in an American accent.

Great story.Awful awful Australain accent.

Suspenseful story, well written as always from Mr McKinty. I have an issue with the front cover being a man leading his family which is the antithesis of what the story is about. The Australian accent was probably the very worst I've heard.

One to read

Good story but possibly the worst Australian accent I've ever heard. I'm struggling to get through as detracts from the story.

Great story, dreadful narrative

For a riveting story like this, you would think an Australian narrator would be engaged. this woman has no idea how to mimic an Aussie accent, which draws away from the whole story, set in Australia. Many times I wanted to stop because of the accent, but the story is so good. Persevere if you can bear it. 😖

an entertaining read

I found this story a bit unbelievable and the big twist was an anti climax for me.

Worst Australian accents ever

I love Adrian's books and his writing style. Due to a lot if things I listen to books mostly these days and this is where The Island went wrong. Mela Lee's murdering of the Australian accent made my ears bleed. It was a cross between Australian and New Zealand with some South African thrown in for good measure (well not so good).

I got about 45 minutes in and couldn't take it anymore. I returned it to Audible for a credit.

Sorry to Adrian but I'm afraid that I couldn't go on with it. The reading will be a hit with Americans I bet but for an Aussie it falls way too short.

Terrible narration

It took me a while to realise the child’s name “Nyam” would have actually been Niamh which is pronounced Neve. The Aussie accents in this book were not good at all.

It was also a bit of a weird book. Unclear who the audience is (Americans that have never left the country?). The Australian slang used was very over the top - especially for a bunch of hicks that allegedly also went to Australias most expensive private school (referenced in passing). There was also constant amazement expressed at Australia being in a different time zone to America. I would the fact that time zones exist is reasonably common knowledge. Maybe this hits the mark for his new audience.

Worst Aussie accent ever

The narration was terrible. Story mediocre. No wonder they resorted to sound effects! Do your research Adrian. Do better Audible!
