Publisher's Summary
Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin, veterans of many battles, return in this novel to the seas where they first sailed as shipmates. But Jack is now a senior captain, commanding a line-of-battle ship sent out to reinforce the squadron blockading Toulon, and this is a longer, harder, colder war than the dashing frigate action of his early days.... A sudden turn of events takes him and Stephen off on a hazardous mission to the Greek islands. All his old skills of seamanship - and luck when fighting against odds - come triumphantly into their own as the story concludes with some fierce and thrilling action.

Aubrey shy? Never you fear!
This instalment has everything we have come to expect from POB and more; the drudgery of blockade, the stresses of command, cloak and dagger negotiations, a glimpse into far-off cultures, and of course the thrill of battle. I was not expecting the book to end so suddenly though, and felt that a little more in the way of resolution would have been ideal. A great companion to the final encounter can be found at http://web.mit.edu/hwebb/www/ionian.html which illustrates the ship’s manoeuvres for those still bamboozled by naval vernacular!

A great way to learn geography... and history
I enjoy the Master and Commander series including this book. The politics, naval tactics, and fast-moving geographical shifts required full attention, but the history and geography are - I believe - very accurate, and the characters continue to grow on me.
