Irene is a professional spy for the mysterious Library, whose staff are sent to different realities to harvest dangerous and mystical fiction.

Irene has been posted to an alternative steampunk London along with her enigmatic new assistant, Kai. Their mission: to retrieve a dangerous edition of Grimms' Fairy Tales. But it has already been stolen.

In London's underground, the laws of nature have been bent – supernatural creatures and unpredictable magic stalk the land. The city is home to vampires, werewolves – factions that are all prepared to fight to the death for this book.

Irene must face a web of deadly danger, deception and secret societies. Her new assistant is hiding secrets of his own. Yet failure is not an option – the nature of reality itself is at stake . . .

excellent story

very much enjoyed both the story and the narration. very much hope Atherton will continue the ideas as a series — there’s so much potential here! only the ending was slightly confusing, but I hope that is hinting at a possible sequel… fingers crossed :)

Engaging and creative

Well written and well read. I started listening to this by overhearing a chapter and was so hooked I had to get it for myself. can't wait to listen to them all.

Great Characters but a little slow

I fell in love with the characters in this book but thought the concept of the story has promise it was a little slow to build and keep my interest. I am hoping the second book will be better but if it's not I will give up on the series. I do like the narrator a lot - very easy to listen to.

Awesome book, I didn't expect to love it so much. Will be reading the rest of the series. Lucky for me, there are eight books.

Fantastic concept, pity about the characters

I loved the idea of a timeless hidden library, fiction based and travelling through endless worlds.
the interaction between the characters were incredibly frustrating. Irene was supposed to be rilliant, but her kindness came off as weak stepping aside to accomosate her partners pesonalitu faults. Kai had the attitude of a petulant horny 15 year old, making the sexual tension with Irene feel off. Vale, while intelligent and open minded, still slipped into a misogynistic attitude. Then one strong female was betrayed as a nasty power grabbing b!+@. Could have been mind blowing, but as it had sexist attitude of a seedy romance novel it was a let down.

Arghk!!!!! It's LibRary!!!!!

The Invisible Library mentions the word library and librarian at least once a paragraph, if not sentence. It was therefore an agony to listen to. (The narration is otherwise fairly well done to excellent.) HOWEVER, the continual mispronunciation of LibRary as libairy consistently throughout the performance by all characters is like an acid drip to the eyeballs. If this bothers you as much as it did me, it would really be best to avoid at all costs. if not, fill your boots. The Invisible Library is probably worth a solid 5 stars all round except for this one deal breaking flaw.

Disappointed

The book had promise but, prose is awkward, the dialogues are stilted, the characters are two-dimensional.
