About this listen
Considered “perhaps the most important American play of this century” by The Daily Telegraph, the Tony Award-winning Best Play has arrived on Audible. Based on Howards End by E.M. Forster, The Inheritance takes place in New York City decades after the AIDS epidemic. Eric Glass is a political activist engaged to his writer boyfriend, Toby Darling. When two strangers enter their lives—an older man and a younger one—their futures suddenly become uncertain as they begin to chart divergent paths. In this epic examination of survival, healing, and class divide, three generations of gay men attempt to forge a future for themselves amid a turbulent and changing America.

More sentimental than dramatic
The play does not hold up over 5 hours. It has good moments but the longer the play goes, the less interesting it is. There is a LOT of telling - the audience is never left to make up its’ own mind, or draw its’ own conclusions. By the end it felt like a room I wanted to get out of. The main characters are not interesting enough to justify the 5 hours of stage traffic. Im glad Audible did the recording. But I wouldnt go and see the play. It’s a shame because the play is well-intentioned. I’d recommend listen to Angels in America instead!

Good for getting to know the script
I listened prior to going to a theatre performance of the play in Canberra Australia. It helped me get familiar with the script. The play has to be seen in the theatre. The production in Canberra was brilliant and deeply affecting. I’m going next month to a different production in Sydney. I look forward to it.
The play covers an enormous amount of ground but that is, in part, how it has the emotional impact it has.
