About this listen
The Iliad, the first of Homer's epic poems, tells of the counsel of Nestor, Achilles's slaying of Hector, and the defeat of the Trojans by the Greeks.
In The Odyssey, in his perilous journey home after the Trojan War, Odysseus must pass through the land of the Cyclopes, encounter Circe the Enchantress, and face the terrible Charybdis and the six headed serpent Scylla.
Both epics are translated here by Samuel Butler.

Very happy with my choice
Figured this would be a hard book to listen to, being so old - however the epics of these adventures are incredible and very rich in detail, with no expense spared on character development and closure on all aspects. Iliads fight scenes are some of the best I’ve ever read in a book - though the account of all those attending armies can be quite long.
The Odyssey started off slower, though turned out to be my favourite of these two books, with the heroic telling of Odysseus’s journey home from Troy unmatched in adventures.

Epic
I've known the story for as long as I can remember I feel like. So I thought this wouldn't surprise me as much as it has.
But to sit and listen to the whole tale told to me...
Spoken in storytelling fashion, rather than reading it in pieces for class in school or watching a part of the story chopped down for theatre, cinema or TV.
It's hard to describe the excitement of hearing a long form story told so well, while knowing what happens anyway I still found myself enchanted.
A classic story of journey, fickle gods more like mortals than immortals. Awesome mortals more divine than gods.
The one and only true epic I've heard.
