Tedious
Although very well written, I would recommend to most readers, to skip nearly the last third of the book : ie; just forward about 10/12 chapters..... the over-descriptiveness is normally found in an author's first publication... Arthur Upfield went on to improve his literary skills and became a brilliant writer!!!!

Thrilling great yarn
This is Upfield's first novel published in 1929. The story is a thrilling yarn with newly engaged Austilene Thorpe accused of murder and while in prison, spirited away to a house in the North-East corner of South Australia. Her fiance, Martin Sherwood, is shocked at her sudden disappearance and becomes very ill, and unfortunately goes blind. Fortunately help is at hand, his brother Monty who is an ANZAC hero and experienced bushman. Together the brothers set out bush, traveling via camel to find Austilene.
The story unfolds with Upfield’s wonderful descriptive prose, so characteristic of his novels.
The narration by the talented John Derum is the icing on the cake.

Shithouse
The worst Upfield book I have ever read or heard read. It does not stand the test of time even allowing for changes in socially acceptable mores as in other Upfield books. A shocker. The characters are utterly painful, the story lame....oh my I gave up. Do not read it if you don't want female characters that are so sterotyped and feeble that you will hurl it, or your iPhone across the room.
