About this listen

This landmark work answers two of the most fundamental questions in history: how and why did the Holocaust happen?

Laurence Rees has spent 25 years meeting survivors and perpetrators of the Third Reich and the Holocaust. Now, in his magnum opus, he combines largely unpublished testimony with the latest academic research to create the first accessible and authoritative account of the Holocaust in over three decades. Rees argues that whilst hatred of the Jews was always at the epicentre of Nazi thinking - and the Holocaust was the most appalling crime in history - what happened cannot be fully understood without considering the murder of the Jews alongside other Nazi plans to kill millions of non-Jews as well. He also reveals the inner machinations of the Nazi state and shows how there was no single decision to start the Holocaust; instead, a series of escalations cumulatively created the horror.

Through a chronological, intensely gripping narrative featuring the latest historical research and enthralling eyewitness testimony, this is the compelling story of humanity's lowest point.

Wow!

I thought I'd read the best book on this topic, "Human Smoke by Nicholson Baker"; the Holocaust is much easier to get a picture. Human Smoke is for statisticians. It gathers every known letter or order or written account and has them in chronological order. The Holocaust is all personal stories. I loved it most! I'm listening to it again.

The best Holocaust referencing available 10/10

It’s hard to describe the profound impact this audiobook had on me. The use of primary interviews gave immense power to my experience. I found this book to be a meticulous investigation into the horrors of the Holocaust. The narrator is flawless.

Very informative.

Good account with lots of good information. Most nazi germany histories include a lot of this info but it's good to read a book exclusively focused on this one aspect.

A fantastically written book 📖 📚

I really enjoyed this book, every page had something useful that one could take something useful away with it.

To date, this is the best book, on the topic of the WWII Holocaust, written to date.

If you are perhaps new to reading WWII holocaust books and/or are looking for a read/listen that covers everything in an easy to digest manner, whilst not getting into too much detail on anyone aspect of the subject matter; than this is your book.

Author Laurence Rees is a very capable writer and has written about four to six books on WWII topic. I hadn’t realised that I already have two of his other literary works. Given that I enjoyed the other books as well, I’m confident to say that this wasn’t a one off. Read this book and then check out the others

Well done 👍🏻

Cheers,

Excellent historical account, very engaging

If you could sum up The Holocaust in three words, what would they be?

Very well researched and eloquently told, this is fantastic account of the atrocities of the Holocaust and how it came to be. Was absolutely galling to listen to at times, but that's the point of educating yourself about this ghastly crime against humanity. Particularly engaging for a newbie to this historical event.
