About this listen
Her eyes flutter open, but it’s dark, and she can only make out shadows. She winces as tight cords dig into the soft skin of her arms, immobilising her. Where am I? The last thing she can remember is Molly, pleading with her to come back inside. Her whole body hurts. She moans again, and then she hears it. Soft breathing nearby. She’s not alone...
As the sun sets into the sea over the pretty Cornish town of St Ives, a young woman, Freya Kempston, hasn’t returned home after a day out in the mall at St Austell. Panicking, her husband begs Detective Lauren Pengelly and her team to find her. Has Freya run out on her stable, loving marriage, or has something more sinister taken place?
Grainy security footage from the mall provides the first break in the case – capturing Freya talking intently with a well-known local mechanic on the day she disappeared. But when cornered, the mechanic denies even knowing her. It's a puzzle that Lauren and her new partner, Detective Matt Price, can't ignore. They scrutinise the video, hunting for missed clues…
Just as Lauren and Matt begin to untangle the man’s alibi, another woman vanishes after a late shift at the local supermarket. And then a third goes missing while at a nightclub in town. A shiver runs down Lauren’s spine when she realises they’re up against a serial predator, and he’s one step ahead of the police.
Digging deeper into the lives of the missing women, Lauren stumbles upon a series of concealed messages and covert meetings – a hidden life none of their families knew about. The three women were connected, bound by secrets that could hold the key to where they’re being held. The revelation sends Lauren and Matt on a heart-pounding race against time, knowing that with every ticking second there’s less chance of finding them alive…
A totally unputdownable mystery from the bestselling author of the Cavendish and Walker series. Guaranteed to have you racing to the end! This book is perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Rachel McLean and J M Dalgliesh.

An interesting story - something quite new
I liked the characters, The concepts in the plot were interesting, but the story seemed to fizzle out suddenly. It was well narrated.

Long drawn out storyline 😒
Where to start??? No progress happens...literally...for nearly three quarters of the book, then what seems a rushed ending. Also, even blind Freddy would know that when you're staking out a place and need to keep an eye on a police officer who may be potentially abducted, that you actually keep an eye on the killer's CAR just in case they do exactly that...and surprise surprise thats what happened!!! 🙄🙄🙄 The story also seemed to be "fleshed out" with random descriptions of people's expressions...I for one have never seen a line tightening between someone's eyes for example...and I agree with another reviewer about Danni...thought I was the only one who found these little darlings annoying 😑 I'm now going to get a refund on this because it was all so implausible 🤨😖

Great characters, team, plot, pace, procedures. I just couldn’t stop listening and finished in one sitting. I’m looking forward to the next one now.

An unlikeable protagonist
Regan writes a good yarn but I was sorry to see Lauren regress in this book. Spinster with a sick pet doesn’t work for me. Glad there was less of savant Danni too.

Corbet is my most preferred narrator and she didn't disappoint. The main cop is objectionable and most unlikeable.
l find the so called 'commitment and dedication to solve crimes' makes for an objectionable character for the rest to tolerate. Should there be another in this series not sure l can be stand it despite the narration and story.

Enjoyed This
At first I was not sure as the lead character was a bit grumpy and often sounded rude. However she did mellow under tutelage from her Sergeant. Story line was great.

Winning Series from Sally Rigby
I love the Sally Rigby books and I’m looking forward to the next in this series. The characters are getting to know each other and the background story is starting to flow really well. Perfect listen for anyone who likes police mysteries without too much unnecessary description and narrative. Clair Corbett is always a delight to listen to.
