About this listen
Glasgow 1975
A deadly fire
An arson attack on a Glasgow warehouse causes the deaths of a young mother and child.
Police suspect it’s the latest act in a brutal gang warfare that’s tearing the city apart – one that DI Duncan McCormack has been tasked with stopping.
A brutal murder
Five years ago he was walking on water as the cop who tracked down a notorious serial killer. But he made powerful enemies and when a mutilated body is found in a Tradeston slum,
McCormack is assigned a case that no one wants. The dead man is wearing a masonic ring, though, and Duncan realizes the victim is not the down-and-out his boss had first assumed.
A catastrophic explosion
As McCormack looks into both crimes, the investigations are disrupted by a shocking event.
A bomb rips through a pub packed with people – and a cop is killed in the blast. The cases are stacking up and with one of his own unit now dead, McCormack is in the firing line.
But he’s starting to see a thread – one that connects all three attacks…

First Class Crime Writing
Could not fault this crime novel. Top class plot with surprises, twists and multiple angles to keep the reader engrossed. The character portrayals are particularly well done. The descriptions of setting and characters and their personalities, are spot on. The movement and body language of the characters are drawn so well it’s impossible not to picture them clearly in your mind’s eye. The novel offers an authentic, gritty portrayal of Glasgow Scotland in 1975. The reader of this book does justice to the excellent writing, making for a deeply satisfying experience for the listener.

Fantastic - thoroughly enjoyed this
A superb follow up to The Quaker, set in 70s Glasgow. Obviously meticulously researched, it sets the scene of this era beautifully. The characters are engaging and the narration is great to listen to. The accents are true to the area.
The tie in with the previous book was clever.
Can’t wait for Liam McIlvanney’s next book.

The Heretic
A great follow up to The Quaker. Well read by Angus King. So descriptive and with the aid of Google map it is easy to work out where all the action takes place

Couldn’t keep up
I couldn’t get into this book. I think there was just too many characters for the one narrator so I found it difficult to keep track of what was going on
