About this listen

A sleepy town is about to wake up and smell the turmeric lattes #DontForgetYourKeepCup

It started with the Hemsworths. Now, Byron Bay local, Aimee Maguire, is about to lose everything because she can’t afford to pay the rent. Her engagement is also on an official time-out since her fiancé doesn’t know what he wants. The last thing she needs is a surprise visit from her micro-influencer niece looking to ‘build her brand’.

Her arrival sets off a chain of events that ends with Aimee tangled up with a group of influencers-turned-reality TV stars, exposing her to the absolute worst of humanity. But somewhere amid this mother of all messes there just might be a silver lining Aimee has been searching for. All she needs to do is embrace the one thing she’s been fighting so hard against – change.

Cashed-up celebs, desperate wannabes, cranky Karens and cringe-worthy hashtags – it’s all here in this hilarious novel about the celebrification of Byron Bay and the power of letting go.

A mixed bag, expected more humour

I listened to this book as I'm a big fan of James Weir's columns and reviews of reality TV shows. Sadly the amount of humour involved was diluted over the length of a book. There were some funny observations about social media and reality TV but overall there seemed to be a bit too much about the first world problems of Gen Y / Millennials. The plot was entertaining enough and the narration was competent. It's worth a listen but I expected a bit more from the author.

Entertaining!

Easy listening. Great to read while at Byron or after...if that's an option! Listen with a Margarita, so Byron!

Just what I needed

I really enjoyed this story, I was in Byron just a couple of weeks ago so really enjoyed knowing where the story was, I’d also seen Byron Baes which related so well with the story. Real (influencer) characters, I liked it.

Enjoyable listen

Great story although the ending annoyed me somewhat and I did feel the main character was unrealistic - anyone that outspoken would not put up with being put “on hold” imho. I do love James Weir’s writing and think it will only improve and this was a great first novel. Why were fidget spinners discussed so much? 😝

so disappointing

I was hoping to see wit and humour. instead I got frustration and and annoyance.
Being from Byron, I was hoping to be transported home, but no.

Good concept bad main character

This book has a very unlikeable main character that I kept forgetting was 37 years old since she consistently acted like a highschooler. I appreciate the concept of the book but the humour and character's didn't land for me.

The Hemsworth Effect

This book was twice as long as it needed to be. I listened through to the end hoping it would get better but most of it stayed quite blah. The narrator did a reasonable job but not sure that the Irish accent was quite pulled off. Also the snicker laughs by the characters throughout the book end up grating on me by the end. None of plots quite gelled. Got to say that mostly this book wasn’t my cuppa tea at all.
