About this listen
Communing with spirits has been both gift and curse to Emme Walters. Now it's made her a killer's target. Emme knows why the Dowager Duchess of Briarleigh invited her to a house party--to investigate whether the duke, Rhys Brammel, murdered his wife years ago. But Emme never imagined she would fall in love with the brooding duke. Branded by society as a possible killer, Rhys is suspicious of Emme and her alleged "gift." Then a late night encounter creates awareness of her other, more attractive, aspects. When Emme's life is threatened, Rhys becomes her protector. Emme and Rhys find passion and peril as they join forces to solve the mysteries at Briarleigh. She made him believe in spirits, but can she make him believe in love?

Narration, Narration, Narration!
This is an old go to reread, and I was happy to get the audio so I could ‘do’ while I ‘listen’. Hmmm.
I must have been spoiled by the first few series I listened to, because those narrators are able to do accents, and create full characters regardless of the gender. Just listening to a sentence, you’d know who was speaking.
Now I’m coming across audiobook after audiobook, where there’s been not the slightest thought out into the narrators ability to do the book justice, or even simply pull it off.
Sadly, LY couldn’t have been a worse choice. Not only is she unable to do male voices, but she’s unable to do an English accent… or a consistent voice. The individual characters tone, accent and speech patterns change in relation to who they are speaking to! There are times when I had no idea which character was talking now because it was so out of whack with how the characters previously sounded - and I KNOW this book well.
Fingers crossed I’ll be able to tune the narrator out over time so I haven’t just wasted money on buying the book
But seriously, how are the powers that be not putting any thought into who they hire to read a story and how they will read it?? It’s not isolated to this book either, but across the board.
Nothing personally against LY. I’m sure there was plenty of books out there she might suit.

Strong characterisation let down by narration
I liked the consistency and growth of the characters and the plot, though it could have been a little shorter. Emme’s ability is well thought out and described and I liked her character as well as Rhys.
Unfortunately, the narrator’s pauses at odd times made for jarring listening as did the frequent mispronounciation of every day words. It was hard to finish for that reason and I wish I’d read it rather than listened.
