Publisher's Summary

Now a hit Netflix miniseries directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino, and Timothy Hutton

Past the rusted gates and untrimmed hedges, Hill House broods and waits.

Four seekers have come to the ugly, abandoned old mansion: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of the psychic phenomenon called haunting; Theodora, his lovely and lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a lonely, homeless girl well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the adventurous future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable noises and self-closing doors, but Hill House is gathering its powers and will soon choose one of them to make its own.

This classic horror novel has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror.

Chilling

I'm not usually a big horror fan but this book had me captivated beginning to end. Jackson's picturesque descriptions with Dunne's expressive narration was incredible. The book owes a lot of its power to the fantastic characters. A classic.

The Haunting of Hill House

It was an interesting storyline. But I liked the movie better. Which is odd for me. I usually like the details and having to use my imagination when reading.

The narrator

The narrator was sensational. The story was a proper ending. As for the story it was imaginative and engaging, but not true horror. The backstory about Eleanor and the house was never truly explained, which left me a bit confused otherwise overall good listen.

Okay

It was a struggle to finish. The characters were a bit tedious and it didn't give any fear as a horror story. Will have to find something more thrilling next time. Narration was good.

Great listen, well written haunted house story.

This is a great story, in the tradition of classy horror. Reminds me of the classics of the genre like Turn of the Screw. Shirley Jackson was an incredible Australian writer who crafted effortless stories. Don’t be fooled by the Netflix version. It’s a pale ghost of a story beside the original book.

Atmospheric horror

I can’t believe I waited this long to read Hill House. The movie was fun, but it’s nothing like the book. Eleanor, Theo, and Luke are witty, intelligent, and surprisingly funny. Even the professor, with his stuffy academic ways, is unexpectedly relatable. Eleanor’s backstory and her inner monologue as she drives to Hill House are delightful. And when the horror finally kicks in, it is low key
... chilling. No wonder it is a definitive classic of Gothic literature.
