About this listen

Miss Emma Harlow hasn't earned the reputation as a hoyden for nothing, so when the duke of Trent discovers her in his conservatory stealing one of his orchids, he isn't surprised - charmed, delighted and puzzled, yes, but not surprised. It is Emma who is amazed. She has naturally concluded that the man reading in the conservatory must be the country cousin (who else in London would actually read?) and is quite vexed to discover that he is the duke of Trent himself - imagine, stealing the duke's prize Rhyncholaelia digbyana under his very nose!

But her vexation doesn't last long. For Emma is a practical young lady with a mission: to end her dear sister Lavinia's engagement to the villainous (and dreadfully dull!) Sir Waldo Windbourne, and she thinks that the famous libertine is just the man for the job. If he would only seduce her sister away from Sir Waldo...well, not seduce exactly, but flirt mercilessly and engage her interest. Perhaps then Lavinia would jilt the baron.

The duke of Trent is resistant, of course. Despite his reputation, he does not toy with the affections of innocents. And besides, it's not her sister he longs to seduce.

Love it!

A lot of fun! I love the lighthearted story, characters and narration. I always go back to this series when I need a laugh and listen with a smile on my face for many laugh out loud moments. I see varied opinions but I love the narrator do - to me higher pitch for the twins comes across as sassy and not intimidated, rather than missish schoolgirls.

Ok but not great. **Warning spoiler**

I don't understand the high ratings for this book. This was a story set in Georgian England, yet the, very jarring, frequent use of the word 'gotten' was just one of the clues that it was written by an American. The Duke's cousin spoke with a ridiculous accent and in an improbable manner, supposedly coming from the north of England, (from memory?), and the heroine’s voice was high pitched, childish and annoying. I would much prefer to listen to a straight narration without the voices. Overuse of the term ‘The Harlow Hoyden’ was irritating too. A book’s title can be used much more subtly, with only one or two mentions, which can be more impactful, particularly with a word like hoyden. I almost stopped listening to the story completely when the sudden, very improper and out of context scene in the carriage occurred. A stolen kiss would have been more likely, and not so startling as the more modern sex scene. I took a long time to get through this book as I kept falling asleep. There was some interesting action later in the book, but generally this was just standard romance novel fare, of the Mills & Boons type, and not in the league of well written Georgette Heyer, or Jane Austen books. I had the rest of the series’ novels in my wishlist and quickly removed them.

Over all,

I too do not understand some of the previous positive reviews. The childlike bird pitched narration was so irritating that I lasted four chapters into the book. I slowed the presentation of the narrator but the pitch was still frustrating. I too removed all of these books from my wish list. Please think of sampling before committing to selection to avoid disappointment.
