About this listen

No one explodes one of the longest-held misconceptions of music history better than Steve Lukather and his band Toto. The dominant pop-culture sound of the late 1970s and '80s was not in fact the smash and sneer of punk but a slick, polished amalgam of rock and R&B that was first staked out on Boz Scaggs' Silk Degrees. That album was shaped in large part by the founding members of Toto, who were emerging as the most in-demand elite session muso-crew in LA, and further developed on the band's self-titled three-million-selling debut smash of 1978. A string of hits followed for the band going into the '80s and beyond. Running parallel to this, as stellar session players, Lukather and bandmates David Paich, Jeff Porcaro and Steve Porcaro were also the creative linchpins on some of the most successful, influential and enduring records of the era.

In The Gospel According to Luke, Lukather tells the Toto story: how a group of high school friends formed the band in 1977 and went on to sell more than 40 million records worldwide. He also lifts the lid on what really went on behind the closed studio doors and shows the unique creative processes of some of the most legendary names in music: from Quincy Jones, Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks and Elton John to Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, Don Henley, Roger Waters and Aretha Franklin. And yet, Lukather's extraordinary tale encompasses the dark side of the American dream.

Engaging, incisive and often hilarious, The Gospel According to Luke is no ordinary rock memoir. It is the real thing....

A Story Best Heard from the Horse's Mouth

Luke's dulcet tones are bittersweet, noone can tell this story better than this guy. He mentions perhaps writing more ... I can't wait!

Oh Yeah Luke

Razor humour, great stories and many laughs.
Luke is one of the best Guitarists on the planet imho. He’s also a damn fine story teller.

This book is for anyone who likes a good rant and rave. If you like the guitar or Toto it’s merely a bonus.

Highly Recommended

An amazing listen!

I have read many music autobiography’s, and this is one of the best. Luke has always been one of my heroes ever since I listened to Toto IV for the first time at age 13.
It is an extremely warts and all account of the highs and lows of being a sought after session and live musician during the heyday of the LA music scene. Luke focuses on both the highs and lows of his incredible life and his many stories are both heart rendering and hilarious.
Luke’s story goes far beyond Toto and I highly recommend this audio book to any music lover, regardless of whether you are a working musician like myself or an audiophile. An amazing listen. I can’t wait for the next instalment!

Great Read, thoroughly enjoyed this.

I very much enjoy Luke as the awesome guitarist he is and Toto as the incredible band they were, as an average fan largely. This was a great bio and as such, one I recommend highly for even the slightest of fans/followers. Amazing!!

One of the very best music biographies out there!

If you are a fan of classic rock and want a glimpse at the many complex interactions and personalities that helped create that soundtrack from the mid-70's to the mid-90's (and beyond) then Steve is your guide.
He tells many excellent tales of his time as a session musician as well as the driving force behind Toto. He narrates the book with charm and honesty and it never feels like he is reading from the page- rather it's like a chat with old friends.
There are cameos from colleagues, siblings and children throughout that keep the narration flowing and interesting.
Put it on and you will not regret the decision.

Anybody who loves music and in particular the 80’s LA music scene will love this. I wished it had been 100 hrs long.

Amazing journey of sacrifice.

A great journey of how I would have loved to live my life as a musician (a truly great one). Rock on Steve Lukather and thank you for giving us great music and showmanship.

Totally Enjoyable

This is one of the best audio books I’ve listened to. So many funny (and sad) moments told in the way that only Steve could tell of his own life. A good insight into the music scene of the last forty years.
