About this listen

Audie Award Finalist, Literary Fiction, 2013

Aged 13, Theo Decker, son of a devoted mother and a reckless, largely absent father, survives an accident that otherwise tears his life apart. Alone and rudderless in New York, he is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. He is tormented by an unbearable longing for his mother, and down the years clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, strangely captivating painting that ultimately draws him into the criminal underworld.

As he grows up, Theo learns to glide between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love - and his talisman, the painting, places him at the centre of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle.

The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling power. Combining unforgettably vivid characters and thrilling suspense, it is a beautiful, addictive triumph - a sweeping story of loss and obsession, of survival and self-invention, of the deepest mysteries of love, identity and fate.

Editorial reviews

Thirteen-year-old Theo Decker is taken in by a wealthy family following an accident, but misses his mother terribly. Action & Adventure he grows up, all he has to remind him of her is a small, very beautiful painting which, while of enormous sentimental value to him, is also sought by all kinds of unsavoury characters. Donna Tartt’s third novel, The Goldfinch, is part thriller, part coming-of-age novel, all mystery. The audiobook is narrated by the theatrical actor David Pittu, handpicked by the author, and is available from Audible.

Loved every second of this richly detailed book. Fell in love with every character. An impressive audio production. David Pittu gets top marks

Amazing story - a brilliant narrator

Transported me - fell in love with the characters, so well read David was great with accents. I was disappointed when finished - will miss Theo and Boris.

The narrative made it palatable

This story had the making of a great tale but there was so much dialogue and it moved very slowly. I'm glad I read it and I would recommend it but it's not a favorite

Talk about a challenging read!

The Goldfinch is not for those light of heart. The mammoth tomb that follows the life of Theo Decker is unrelenting. It took me a while to get through the book because I had a limit on how much I could listen to the dark twists and turns that Theo experiences, in any one day. Tartt wrote a compelling novel that does not shy away from the darker side of the world and takes our protagonist from, in my opinion, sympathetic to infuriating and stupid, back to sympathetic. It's always hard to read books where you disagree with the character who is telling the story, but nonetheless, I was engaged with the story from page one, which doesn't often happen. David Pittu did a great job narrating this title and I recommend it to the (probably few) people who haven't already read it.

My favourite book of all time - perfect narration

A friend recommended this to me and promised me i would go "on a spectacular adventure", and The Goldfginch did not disappoint. I loved Secret History but avoided this one for years because it was about art theft, a topic which didn't interest me. From the moment I started listening I was hooked. The story and characters are utterly absorbing, but I have to say it was the narrator's voice which sold it. I guess he must be an actor because he did all the different voices - perfectly - and it's the first audio book where I felt he was 100 percent in character (a boy who grows into a young man). I loved this book so much that I shed tears at the end. Partly because it was so beautifully written, partly because it was over.

unexpectedly loved it

Absolutely loved this book. it's quiet long but I could have kept listening. There were parts that dragged on a little but it didn't matter because I loved it so much. Very detailed, honest and real.
I became quiet attached to the characters and was very disappointed when it ended.

The finale

The last two chapters were the most insightful essentially summarising the themes throughout the whole book. This edition was very well narrated.
