FROM THE GLOBALLY ACCLAIMED AUTHOR OF GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRINGVenice, 1486. Across the lagoon lies Murano. Time flows differently here – like the glass the island’s maestros spend their lives learning to handle.
Women are not meant to work with glass, but Orsola Rosso flouts convention to save her family from ruin. She works in secret, knowing her creations must be perfect to be accepted by men. But perfection may take a lifetime.
Skipping like a stone through the centuries, we follow Orsola as she hones her craft through war and plague, tragedy and triumph, love and loss.
The beads she creates will adorn the necks of empresses and courtesans from Paris to Vienna – but will she ever earn the respect of those closest to her?
Tracy Chevalier is a master of her own craft, and The Glassmaker is vivid, inventive, spellbinding: a virtuoso portrait of a woman, a family and a city that are as everlasting as their glass.

Wonderful
I think this is my favourite Tracy Chevalier book. I enjoy her work and her narrators are great but there was something more to the Glass Maker. I’ve been to Venice and Murano and she creates them beautifully and although unsure at first, ended up loving how the story spans and intertwines with history, how life and the world changes but at the same time, it doesn’t! The narrator was fabulous and nailed the accent, just the right amount!

A novel take on the family saga
I was initially put off by the idea that time would jump but not for the characters, but it was actually a wonderful device that allowed you to trace the historical evolution of Venice and the larger world, whilst also tracing the life path of the Rosso family. And as someone who collects glass in all its forms, the story of the glass industry of Murano was fascinating. And the ending was unexpected but just so right. Loved this story, and it was beautifully narrated.

Shatteringly good!
I loved the skipping structure of this novel. There was a sense of mysterious movement through the years which was delightful. The story of this glassmaker with her family enduring all sorts of love and tragedy was exceptionally well-written with evidence of clear historical research presented down to the smallest detail.
Thoroughly recommend.

Clever historical fiction
Having been to both Venezia and Murano, this novel was filled with joy. The reflection of centuries of life through the one set of characters is so clever, I loved this book, loved the narration and would highly recommend to others.

A unique idea
Beautifully done. A cool concept that really makes you reflect how far the world has come so quickly. Great characters and even shed a tear or more at the end.
