DI Vera Stanhope is not one to make friends easily, but when one of her neighbours goes missing, she feels duty-bound to find out what happened. It’s an easy job to track the young woman down to the Writers’ House, a country retreat where aspiring authors gather to work on their novels.
But things get complicated when a body is discovered and Vera’s neighbour is found with a knife in her hand. Vera knows that she should hand the case over to someone else. But the investigation is too tempting and she’s never been one to follow the rules.
Working with Sergeant Joe Ashworth, she starts the hunt for a murderer who has turned killing into an art form.

An easy and diverting listen
The Vera series is so enjoyable, in an easy going if murderous way. Vera is a delightful curmudgeon, and Sgt Joe her perfect foil. This is another good story, well told, with an ending that I didn’t see coming. The book makes for a good companion for 10.5 hours.

A bit tedious
I love Vera and was looking forward to this one. However I found it too trite and cliche ridden, even though it was clearly a parody of the genre, it was just too endlessly silly and I grew bored of it.

Drew me in from the start to the end. Realistic characters, lively story. intriguing. creative. funny at times.

Great story but spoiled by the terrible attempt at the accents not even close to Vera and the other characters were also disappointing...

Murdered the narrator. Please.
Can’t tell if the story is good or bad because the reader is truly unbearable. Hideous combination of a sing- song ‘every sentence ends softly with a half-question’ narrative voice with “oh hey how realistic” ‘rough as guts’ spoken accents. Story buried by the awful delivery. Couldn’t stand it though I tried hard.
