Publisher's Summary

Dottie and Mary forged a friendship over a bag of penny sweets when they were eight years old. They've shared everything together since then. Now, at seventeen, they're both shopgirls working at Woolworths.

As they go out in the world in pursuit of love and happiness and life becomes more complicated, the simplicity of their childhood dissolves. The heady excitement of first love will consume them both, but the pain of unintentional betrayal will test their friendship.

With friends like this who needs...

At first I liked this book and it's tale of friendship. But it was hard to keep liking it as it went on. Mary's was self absorbed and Dottie seemed to put up with being treated badly again and again by Mary. Just when you thought she was reflecting on how toxic the friendship was she would be back at Mary's beck and call, putting herself second and made to feel guilty (by Mary and her own family) even after Mary did something unforgivable to her. I kept hoping the book was going to move empower Dottie to live her own life, but even at the end she didn't seem to be living her own life.

Lovely story

This was a delightful book. Pleasant narrator. The storyline kept me interested. Look forward to see what the next book reveals.
