About this listen

Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award 2014

Not every gift is a blessing.

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her 'our little genius'.

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh.

Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favourite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up.

Melanie doesn't know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.

Emotionally charged and gripping from beginning to end, The Girl with all the Gifts is the most powerful and affecting thriller you will listen to this year.

The phenomenal word-of-mouth best seller The Girl with all the Gifts is now a major film on widespread distribution starring Glenn Close, Gemma Arterton and Paddy Considine.

Editorial reviews

‘Not every gift is a blessing.’ In M. R. Carey’s thrilling audiobook, Melanie is a special child – The Girl with All the Gifts. She has an unusually high IQ, and yet she does not understand why she is subject to such high security – cared for at gunpoint, locked in a cell, strapped to a wheelchair. She loves school and tells her teacher, Helen Justineau, what she plans to do when she grows up, but Miss Justineau just looks sad. Narrated by the wonderful Finty Williams, The Girl with All the Gifts is available for download from Audible.

Engaging all the way from the first few pages.

The narrator was great. An awesome use of voice changes for the different characters.
The story has a very common apocalypse style but still kept me interested all the way through. I'm just about to start the next one in the series.

loved it

a well thought out zombie story with good direction and a beautiful finish. very realistic (as far as zombie apocolypses go) very reminiscant of the video game "last of us" but i think it has a nicer touch to the ending.

Fantastic, scary thriller

I really enjoyed this book. The story was quite gripping and edge of your seat scary at times. The narration was fantastic, each character seemed quite well separated in voice.

Great Story and Beautifully read

I had planned on steaming the movie but couldn't get it free in Australia. So glad I chose to get the audio book instead.
A nice take on the zombie apocalypse without too much gore.

Wonderful performance with an unexpected end

This book had me hooked within the first five minutes. Finty Williams is a great voice actor and nails the level of performance required. The book was well written and translates well into an audio format. I particularly liked how M R Carey relays science into the plot to explain certain events.

Emotional Philosophical Horror

This was an incredibly well-written novel, performed wonderfully by Finty Williams. Well recommended for lovers of horror/scifi/literary fiction and well, just damn good writing. Might be good to read the story of Pandora in Greek myths first, as it's quite significant in the story.

A new favourite.

M. R. Carey has written a post apocalyptic novel that is non-exaggerated yet enthralling. I enjoyed the depth and diversity of the characters throughout the book and I felt that the relationships were realistic.

The science is believable, though the gaps in what the narration gives you in terms of the development of the pandemic is somewhat frustrating.
