About this listen

At Santa Cruz Central High School, they called them the misfits, the outcasts, the weirdos. But most of us knew them as the Lost Boys....

Miller Stratton is a survivor. After a harrowing childhood of poverty, he will do anything it takes to find security for himself and his mom. He’s putting all his hopes and dreams in the fragile frame of his guitar and the beauty he creates with its strings and his soulful voice.

Until Violet. No one expects to meet the love of their life at age 13. But the spunky rich girl steals Miller’s heart and refuses to give it back.

Violet McNamara’s life hasn’t been as simple as it looks. Her picture-perfect family is not so perfect after all. Her best friend, Miller, is her one constant, and she is determined not to ruin their friendship with romantic complications.

But the heart wants what it wants. As Miller’s star begins to rise to stratospheric heights, what will it take for Violet to realize that she’s the girl in all of his love songs?

friends to lovers

My first Emma Scott book and I really enjoyed it. Love the flow of the writing, loved the characters and loved the basic plot.

I love the way she wrote the Hero, very swoony and a good guy (well, tries to be) and the Heroine was well adjusted too (not one eye roll from me). The sub characters each added a dash of extra flavour to the story and I could tell the author was setting them up for their own stories. Perhaps this is why it was a bit longer than I thought it needed to be. At one point I thought we were just about finished but it still had another 3 hours to go (audiobook) then the same with about an hour to go. There was also a LOT of drama and a LOT going on (homelessness, abandonment, illness, domestic violence, cliched catty girls, bullies, long distance relationship, both losing virginity).

Overall though, I enjoyed it and would definitely like to read more by this author.

Fantastic Gripping Coming Of Age Story

“She was warmth and home. She was where I wanted to be always.”

This follows Violet and Miller. Miller comes from a broken home, with not much money and being homeless. One night he needed to get some air but didn’t expect to meet the love of his life at 13. Becoming best friends, sneaking in her room to hang out, saving his life and caring for him through his difficult circumstances it’s a story that pulls on your heartstrings.

This book had me gripped also the audiobook narration is fantastic. There chemistry and getting the feeling of its always been you. At parts, I was gutted and wanted to scream at these two as it felt like the right person, wrong time. Every time I tried to guess what was coming I was wrong. But I did call out two characters that were acting suss as turned out I was right. I love this book and can't quite pinpoint why I give it 4.5 over 5 stars but just read it. I'm excited for book two.

loved this book!

So many sad but poignant turning points in this story. Quite heartbreaking for those kids who don't fit in or are at the mercy of what decisions their parents make, when their children are young and vulnerable. Their parents decisions affect them for the rest of their lives.
