About this listen
The basis for Joseph L. Mankiewicz's cinematic romance starring Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison.
Burdened by debt after her husband's death, Lucy Muir insists on moving into the very cheap Gull Cottage in the quaint seaside village of Whitecliff, despite multiple warnings that the house is haunted. Upon discovering the rumors to be true, the young widow ends up forming a special companionship with the ghost of handsome former sea captain Daniel Gregg. Through the struggles of supporting her children, seeking out romance from the wrong places, and working to publish the captain's story as a book, Blood and Swash, Lucy finds in her secret relationship with Captain Gregg a comfort and blossoming love she never could have predicted.
Originally published in 1945, made into a movie in 1947, and later adapted into a television sitcom in 1968, this romantic tale explores how love can develop without boundaries, both in this life and beyond.

This is not what it looks like
This is not exactly a love story but a self-discovery tale, written in a very understated, seemingly simplistic manner. And the ghost is not really a ghost but more like her inner voice.
As for the narration, it was sublime, a joy to listen to.
5/5 stars without a doubt.

Reliving an old great story
Thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful old tale. A pleasant escape from the present.
The movie is one of my favourites, and pleasingly it proved to be an accurate portrayal of the original book. Very well delivered, an easy listen.

A beautiful, funny, gentle tale
Written by a woman, this charming short novel explores the experience of a middle class woman in early c.20th Britain with sensitivity, humor and insight. Not a dull page in the book.

Love the Movie Love The Book
I have loved and watched and rewatched the movie for many years, perhaps Gene Tierney has something to do with that.
Although a little different from the movie. This book has now found a place in my heart and will be re-listen to again and again.
My one comment is that the movie ending is so much better. But I still have a tear in my eye.
Must listen. Highly recommended.

The book is not the tv series
I loved the tv series when I was growing up.
So I got this to remind me of the series. It’s a sweet book beautifully narrated by our very own elizabeth Jasicki
It’s a sweet sweet story.
