About this listen
The moment I heard how McAra died I should have walked away. I can see that now...
The narrator of Robert Harris's gripping new novel is a professional ghostwriter - cynical, mercenary, and with a nice line in deadpan humour. Accustomed to working with fading rock stars and minor celebrities, he jumps at the chance to ghost the memoirs of Britain's former prime minister, especially as it means flying to the American resort of Martha's Vineyard in the middle of winter and finishing the book in the seclusion of a luxurious house.
But it doesn't take him long to realise he has made a terrible mistake. His predecessor on the project died in circumstances that were distinctly suspicious, and the ex-prime minister turns out to be a man with secrets in his past that are returning to haunt him - secrets with the power to kill.

Honestly ... just read the novel
I'm so reluctant to provide a less than enthusiastic review especially of one of my very favourite books. If you are really, really fond of the written book as I am (I read it about five or six times a year, I just love it!) this audiobook may be a disappointment. While other reviewers have (accurately) focused on the accents, which are somewhat grating and inconsistent, my main difficulty was with the characterisation, in particular that of the (first person viewpoint) narrator. In the novel, this character is so very likeable - self-deprecating, ironic, poetic, brutally self-honest and funny. Unfortunately these endearing characteristics did not come across at all in the audiobook. I also often found it hard to tell the difference between narrative and dialogue for this character. Other characterisations also seemed somewhat lacking, particularly those for Amelia and Ruth (who is written as a very quick, sharp and incisive character but whose dialogue came across as very soft and slow). Listening to Audible a lot does spoil you - there are narrators, and there are voice actors, and a good voice actor who can consistently portray male and female characters, and cleanly switch from dialogue to narrative is essential for a novel like this one. Based on this performance, Mr Jayston's skills seem more likely to be in the narrative field. Audible, can you pretty please do another production of this .... :)

Great listening. Especially the end.
I loved this story. Robert Harris is my favourite historical novelist and Anton Lessor is always worth listening to.
