About this listen
In this riveting memoir, Gilmour recounts the call-outs that summer: some dangerous, some gruesome, some downright ridiculous. And we meet fellow paramedic John who, they say, can get a laugh out of everyone except the dead. As the city heats up that summer, however, even John begins to lose his sense of humour. People are unravelling - and Benjamin and John are no exception.
The Gap is a vivid portrait of the lead-up to Christmas; an unflinching, no-holds-barred look at what happens after the triple-zero call is made - the drugs, nightclubs, brothels, drunk rich kids, billionaires, domestic disputes, the elderly, emergency births, even a kidnapping. Patients share their innermost feelings, and we witness their loneliness, their despair and their hopes.
Beautifully written and sharply observed, The Gap exposes the fragility of our lives and the lengths the paramedics will go to to try to save us.

A well written insight to some of our true heroes
My respect for paramedics ( and all public service men and woman) has just tripled. I listened to this book whilst doing my daily job (gardening) and people would look at me strange when I was laughing or crying but I just couldn’t help it. Thank you for the amazingly truthful insight into your world and thank you for your service.

Fascinating and beautiful
Loved the author's sensitive point of view. The cinematic angles and the humane interactions described in the book. This book brings to light the amazing selfless service paramedics perform every day and every night as they are called to save lives and be first responders. Very recommended.

Insightful, thoughtful and emotionally challenging
Great thoughtful writing that gave such an interesting insight into the "normal" lives of paramedic's in Sydney.
Made me think and question things I never would have thought of and really made me reconsider my perspective on Australia's EMS and first responders.

A MUST READ!!!
Such a well-written and heartfelt insight into the life and trauma of a Paramedic. I immensely enjoyed listening from start to end, and although I always admired Paramedics, now I have a stronger understanding of what they endure and how much the community take them for granted.
Fantastic book, and excellent narration.

Best Book I’ve Read This Year
I absolutely loved this book and couldn’t stop listening. I binged it in one day. I appreciated how raw and real the stories were, unfiltered and genuine. Benjamin Gilmour is one talented man!
