Never assume
Well kids, this heart wrenching and emotional story has a moral.
Never assume.
It makes an ass out of u & me and potentially gets you blown up, unemployed and lonely.
Emma Cooper's elegant writing style is reminiscent of the classics. The eloquence of language and descriptions of objects, people, feelings and even seasons gives richness and depth to the story to the point where the reader can't not feel true connection with the characters and their journeys.
But at the heart of the story is misunderstanding and life altering decisions made based on assumptions and the failure to communicate.
This book had me cursing the author for writing such cruel fates and circumstances for both Sam and Sophie. That said, it wouldn't have been the great story it was if either of them had simply asked for explanations of the other in the very first place.
The excruciating situations had my mind whirling and my anxiety almost sent me to the end of the book to verify that the outcome at the ending would be worth the perseverance.
The back story of Sophie's mother lends an added dimension of deep love and loss that seems to underpin the premise of the book. But then the bond she has with Helen is warm, tender and caring. Mr and Mrs McLaughlan simply made me laugh out loud and Charlie's story made me weep.
Performances by Aidan Kelly and Helen Keeley were top notch, although Helen's Irish accent could use some work.
Highly recommend this book.
