About this listen

At 10:30 p.m. Johnny Bull reached the top of the vertical shaft and cut through the last few inches of soil. He breathed in heavenly fresh air. The March night was cold and crisp and only the stars were out. Finally, after 11 months of grueling digging, patience, and anxious waiting, the night of the escape was underway and freedom was very near.

Johnny tentatively poked his head out of the hole in the ground and immediately realized there was a problem; the tunnel was too short. It cleared the perimeter of the fence but had not reached the woods, so anyone emerging from the hole might be spotted by the German guards patrolling every few minutes.

With the escape nearly foiled before it had begun, a revised plan was quickly implemented and everything went smoothly for two hours. One at a time, the men emerged from the exit tunnel and disappeared into the darkness.

At 5 a.m. disaster struck.
