About this listen

Sarah Churchill, first Duchess of Marlborough, was the glamorous and controversial subject of hundreds of satires, newspaper articles and publications both during her lifetime and after her death.

Tied to Queen Anne by an intimate friendship, Sarah hoped to wield power equal to that of a government minister. When their relationship soured, she blackmailed Anne with letters revealing their intimacy and accused her of perverting the course of national affairs by keeping lesbian favourites - including Sarah's own cousin Abigail Masham.

Sarah was a compulsive and compelling writer, narrating the major events of life at Blenheim Palace and at court with herself often centre stage. Attacked for traits that might have been applauded in a man, she was also capable of inspiring intense love and loyalty, deeply committed to her principles and to living what she believed to be a virtuous life.

This biography brings Sarah Churchill's own voice, passionate and intelligent, back to life and casts a critical eye over images of the Duchess handed down through art, history and literature. Here is an unforgettable portrait of a woman who cared intensely about how we would remember her.

Very thorough and very worthy but monotonous audio performance

Very thorough and very worthy of a significant and strong woman, brilliant in places but can get bogged down and loses pace, a monotonous audio performance, unfortunately does not always do justice to this interesting tome.

Boring

I still had six hours to go but couldn't bring myself to listen any longer. I don't think there's anything I didn't already know about poor long-suffering Queen Anne, the 'Favourite' Sarah and the favourites who succeeded Sarah so nothing gained there. Then there is the cast of extremely unpleasant characters. Listening to the bickering and general bitchiness in Anne's circle reduced me to dreading the next self-serving quote from Sarah. Strong successful woman she might have been but hardly a role model given that there's little about her personality to like. The longer I listened the more Bosombe's narration sounded like an automaton: correct pronunciation and pleasant accent but SO flat and wooden. And her pronunciation of Abigail as Abbeygail drove me nuts. I'm afraid Ophelia Field's diligent research, coupled with machine-like narration, has produced a dud.
